The "Person of Interest" final episode of 2012, "Shadow Box," contained all the intrigue and gray areas between good and evil fans could hope for from their favorite crime drama. Being the 2012 finale, it closed on a special cliffhanger that will leave viewers with a lump in their throats until next year. We also get a little of all our favorites in the episode, including Bear.
Bear gets a bath
Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Finch (Michael Emerson) come face to face with one of their most challenging jobs: washing their dog. Finch reminds Reese that Bear is Reese's dog, but we all know the truth. Finch and Reese share the dog in their unique relationship. Bear is the child in their "marriage." Able-bodied Reese leaves Finch with the difficult task of drying the dog soon after learning about the next POI, feigning deeper than normal immediate concern for her safety.
A POI with a cause
The next POI is Abby (Jessica Collins), a woman with initially unclear motives. Her cause lies in a gray area. After losing her soldier brother in war, she decides to save another soldier, Shayn (Brian J. Smith). But saving Shayn involved stealing a great deal of money from a man named Chapple (John Bedford Lloyd), who made home loans to Shayn and his friends. He tripled their interest rates quickly, so they found it impossible to pay back the money, causing them to lose their homes.
Reese and Finch's initial attempt to save the couple is somewhat humorous. Shayn and Abby actually have everything worked out quite well, up to the point of stealing the money. It is the first time interference from Finch and Reese actually seems to do more harm than good, until the robbery.
Reese even receives a good kick in the shin from Abby, which is actually warranted at the time. His very subtle look of pain, with a simple, "please don't do that," is enough to cause uncontrollable giggles.
A charity with an agenda
Chapple operates a charity, Homes For Our Returning Heroes, that creates home loans for the purpose of making a profit once the soldiers lose their homes due to a loan default. The charity's information for the accounts containing all that money is in a safe deposit box. Shayn and Abby decide to break in to the bank using explosives. The goal is the retrieve the account information and money that was stolen by Chapple.
Unfortunately, the pair haven't thought things through. When Reese asks how they plan to return all the money to the veterans who lost it, they have no clue. Reese makes a rash decision and decides to help them anyway, because he agrees with their cause.
Donnelly's new bestie
FBI Agent Donnelly (Brennan Brown) is back on Reese's heels, tracking him using phone cloning signals Finch had hacked into the electronics in Shayn's prosthetic arm. He asks Carter (Taraji P. Henson) to join him in finding Reese. Once she agrees, he immediately removes the bugs Finch and Reese had placed in her phone, then shares with her the details of his tracking. She covertly replaces the bugs in her phone, and uses it to warn Finch and Reese about what's going on.
Donnelly has to be one of the most hilarious characters on the series. He is portrayed as a dead-serious agent, who believes he knows the truth about "the man in the suit." In reality, he is so clueless, it's amazing that Brennan Brown is able to keep a straight face while delivering his lines. The best part is that he enlists the help of the one woman who is working against him.
Meanwhile, Fusco tracks Beecher
Fusco (Kevin Chapman) worries that Carter's new love interest, Beecher (Sterling K. Brown), may be involved with HR. He tracks Beecher to a meeting with Quinn (Clarke Peters). Quinn is the head of HR, but Fusco doesn't know that, and Beecher seems to be clueless, as well. When Simmons (an HR cop, played by Robert John Burke) shows up, it's a sign of HR-goings-on, but Fusco has no idea what it could be. If Fusco weren't so thick, he'd probably realize that Quinn is the one involved with HR. Maybe this will be his first clue, which he won't realize until later.
Happily ever after (almost)
When Chapple's henchmen arrive to stop Shayn and Abby from stealing the money, Reese has already helped them nab it. Now it's just a matter of helping them escape. Finch is ready for them in the lobby with IDs and badges, but Reese has to stay behind to fend off the henchmen. Unfortunately, Donnelly arrives with Carter in tow while Reese is still trapped. Donnelly finally gets his man … plus the three henchmen, who conveniently act as decoys. Reese is caught, but he's still not discovered. At least Reese said he was finally happy earlier in the episode. Perhaps his happiness made him a little too headstrong, thinking he could do anything without getting caught. How will he get out of this one?
Luckily, it won't be a very long wait: the next episode, "2πR," airs Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013.
