"Pretty Little Liars" is full of conspiracy theories, but one that seems to be gathering a lot of support in recent weeks is the theory that Aria (Lucy Hale) is "A." We know that Mona (Janel Parrish) was the first "A," but it has become clear that she was not running the show. It's very easy to scoff at the idea that one of the girls might be behind, or at least involved in, the torturing, but when you look at the evidence, there are some pretty interesting hints that Aria might be on the A Team. Let's take a look.
"Miss Aria, You're A Killer, Not Ezra's Wife"
Mona Vanderwall's creepy level reached new heights when she began uttering seemingly senseless words while Aria and Hanna (Ashley Benson) visited her at the institution. Hanna was quick to realize that Mona was actually using a secret code she invented once. To crack the code, all Hanna had to do was take the first letter of each word in the sentence to form a new word or words. Mona uttered many sentences in front of Hanna and Aria, and "Miss Aria, You're A Killer, Not Ezra'a Wife," was one of them. Breaking it down, that code spells out, "Maya knew." It's odd that, not only did they not attempt to crack this, Aria in particular didn't bring it up to defend herself. Fans think this is a much bigger clue than it seemed. Is Aria Ali's (Sasha Pieterse) killer?
The timing of the first text message from "A"
In the pilot episode, Aria and her family had just returned to Rosewood after a year away. It wasn't until she was home and settled that "A" emerged. The idea is that Aria came home to check out the latest goings-on, caught up on the news of Alison's murder investigation, then started her reign of terror. This is plausible, but probably not proof enough that Aria is involved. After all, it was the anniversary of Ali's death, so the timing would be perfect for anyone who wanted to torment the girls.
Nothing awful has ever happened to Aria
"A" is one of the most terrifying TV villains we've seen in a long time. "A" isn't just randomly throwing out threats, "A" is right inside their heads and has no problem causing physical harm to any of the girls. Except Aria. Hanna got hit by a car, Emily (Shay Mitchell) was drugged and ended up in hospital, and while Spencer has never been physically hurt by "A," she has had every one of her relationships ruined or damaged. Aria seems to have gotten off very lightly with only threats to break up her and Ezra (Ian Harding), and the revelation that her father had an affair.
The toffee connection
This is a bit of a weird one. In an episode in Season 2, Aria was eating toffee flavored ice cream. Seems like no big deal, but it is an odd thing to mention if there isn't a good reason. Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) nipped into the scene and asked Aria if she could have the ice cream. Later, Mona mused about her lipstick - the color? Toffee Tango. Immediately, this triggered a link between Melissa and Mona, but what if we were misled? Perhaps it links Aria to Mona instead?
Aria is the only one who hasn't seen Alison since her death
For a dead girl, Ali certainly makes a lot of appearances in the show. Even after her death, she has been seen by each of the other pretty little liars. Hanna saw Ali when she was in the hospital after being run over, Emily saw her when she collapsed after almost being gassed to death in a garage, and Spencer saw her when she crept in through her bedroom window one night. Each of these incidents could easily be passed off as tricks of the mind, but Aria has never seen Ali at any point. Is it because she knows Ali is alive?
Her friends said Aria is the best liar
Due to her managing to cover up her relationship with Ezra for a very long time, Aria's friends branded her the best liar of the group. It was all said in jest, of course, but this could be another indication that Miss Montgomery has been hiding more than a fling with her teacher.
All of these hints present a very compelling argument for Aria being "A." However, what we lack is a clear motive. What reason would she possibly have for ruining her friends' lives? To find out the truth, we'll have to keep watching, but keep an eye out for more clues about Aria!
