Almost every "Pretty Little Liars" fan screamed out loud when it was revealed that Toby Cavenaugh is "A," but it wasn't much of a surprise to the actor who plays him, Keegan Allen. In a recent interview, Allen explained that he knew he was "A" since Season 1! There was some speculation about whether or not Toby was always "A," or whether the writers changed it up for shock value, but it seems this was the plan all along. So, looking back over the show's history, were there any clues? Let's take a look!
He has a long and disturbing history with the pretty little liars
Most of the horrible things the girls did in the past were orchestrated by Ali (Sasha Pieterse). She made Toby's life a living hell when she convinced her friends he was spying on them through their bedroom windows, but that was only the start. Ali then devised a plan to get revenge on Toby by setting fire to his shed. Toby's stepsister, Jenna (Tammin Sursok), was inside at the time, and the "prank" left her blind. In order to avoid getting herself and her friends in trouble, she blackmailed Toby into taking the blame, by threatening to tell everyone he was molesting Jenna. Toby was then sent away to reform school for blinding Jenna.
Although Hanna (Ashley Benson), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Aria (Lucy Hale) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) weren't responsible for the fire, their silence about who really started it is definitely motive enough for Toby want to get some payback.
In Season 1, a very telling tattoo was seen on Toby's waist. It said, "9/01 Free At Last." The liars were quick to realize that was the date Alison went missing, and jumped to the immediate conclusion that he was the one who killed her. Toby explained it away, and all suspicions about him being the killer were eventually dropped. However, it looks like this was a much bigger clue than we first thought. Not only does the date symbolize his freedom from Ali, it also gave him the freedom to start his own little vendetta against the people who wronged him.
His closeness to Spencer
It's not unusual for two people who never liked each other to suddenly get involved in a relationship, but Toby getting with Spencer was a huge twist. We saw them getting closer over a number of episodes so it wasn't as big a shock as it could have been. But let's backtrack a little. Spencer was the one who shouted the loudest that Toby was the one who killed Ali. It was her personal mission to bring him down, so even after she apologized, it's was a bit strange that Toby would forgive the fact that she was hell bent on getting him arrested. Looking at it from an "A" point of view - his move was perfect. Not only did it bring him right into the inner circle of the girls, they trusted him so much that they began to reveal more secrets than ever.
Toby's relationship with Spencer hit a wall when she stopped confiding in him about "A." He demanded to know what was going on, on the pretense of being a great boyfriend, but in truth, he just wanted to know where they were with their investigation. When Spencer refused to give it up, Toby took off to work in another town. With him far away, and "A" still torturing the girls, he removed all suspicion from himself. However, it should have raised alarm bells because for most of Season 2, he couldn't keep away from Spencer for a second.
