For the Dec. 20 installment of "Project Runway All Stars," the designers were paired up for a fashion face-off. The challenge: Design a look inspired by the 1920s for the modern woman. Every contestant was given an envelope that contained the destination of their woman, which decided who would design against who. Joshua and Emilio picked the garden party, Uli and Laura Kathleen got the nighttime soirée, and Anthony Ryan and Ivy ended up with the after-hours speakeasy. So who was the best, who was the worst, and who went home?
Emilio and Joshua
Emilio decided to use a print, while Joshua chose solid colors in order to create draping effect. Both dresses had strong elements, but ultimately the judges went with Emilio's print, which they felt gave an effective twist on the '20s style. But Joshua's look was just as deserving (loved the lime green in the back), but he could have done without the broach or handbag. Emilio's was very well done (as always), but the look had a been-there, done-that feel to it, and it did not scream '20s.Ivy and Anthony Ryan
This one was a no brainer from the moment the outfits came down the runway. Though the cut was a little too low for some, Anthony Ryan again proved that he still has a good eye for design and construction, making a stunning feather cape-like item. Ivy, on the other hand, sent another painfully constructed look down the runway. The intention, as always, was good (plus the fabric itself was stunning), but the execution just wasn't there. Her model looked boxy, which is not something most women want from their nighttime looks. The judges were right to pick her for the bottom for the third consecutive time.Uli and Laura Kathleen
Uli wanted to break away from the feathers and trimmings that are her signature, but since this was the '20s challenge, she felt that she might get docked points for going in another direction. She was right to stick to her strengths, which helped produce another stunning work. It had the right vibe, yet still managed to be modern in its execution. Laura Kathleen also did very good work, but the pants killed any success she made with the top. Plus, the fur coat she made felt out of place, giving her look a heavy (or as Isaac put it, a cavewoman) aesthetic. This put her in the bottom with Ivy, and ultimately got Laura Kathleen sent home. Do you think that was undeserved? Laura Kathleen has already won a challenge, after all, and Ivy has yet to do so. Did the right all-star go home?
