Randy Jackson's Feud With Adam Levine Heats Up

American Idol's Randy Jackson may be ready to make amends with The Voice's Adam Levine, but the Maroon 5 frontman isn't willing to shake on it just yet.

Despite slamming NBC's The Voice as second-rate and "gimmicky" last summer, Jackson told Ellen DeGeneres in a Wednesday interview that he meant "no disrespect" to his reality TV colleagues, including Levine.

"Adam's a friend of mine," Jackson, 55, told DeGeneres of Levine, 32, who once said Idol's rejects could win The Voice. "I think The Voice is a great show."

Arguing that FOX's Idol simply paved the way for competition shows like The Voice, Jackson at the time also took a pointed jab at Levine's Voice protege, Javier Colon, who had a failed record contract with Capitol Records before auditioning for NBC's series.

But Levine isn't buying Jackson's mea culpa. Speaking to shock jock Howard Stern Tuesday about their war of words, Levine argued that former Journey band member Jackson should appreciate the fact that reality competition shows like theirs offer continued chances at fame.

"Randy Jackson of all people should get it considering American Idol was his second chance," Levine shot back on Stern's morning radio show.

"You can have as many [chances to succeed] as you want," Jackson clarified to DeGeneres. "I'm saying the difference is [that Idol features] new people. Because the first thing that goes into my mind if you have had three or four [prior opportunities to make it in the industry] is that there is something that you're missing that you don't quite know yet. People have tried to discover you but it didn't happen."

I like both show but the voice is now my favotite. I like the idea that they are selected on their talent not their look

The Voice contestants seem to have more talent at the start. It is also a more enjoyable show, and the contestants are not ostracized and made to feel "less than," as is the case with American Idol. AI has become "mere spectacle."

Ya, but the coaches have horrible taste in who has talent and who doesn't.

I know that The Voice prides itself on not caring about looks, except that both Blake and Christina commented that one of the male auditioners had to have good looks because of the way the audience went wild for them. If there was no studio audience for the blind auditions then I would say that looks really do not matter. I watch both AI and The Voice. I feel that you do need to get all of the chances you need to make it in entertainment.

I love the Voice because you are judged by your voice and not your looks where in Idol they have said that the person doesn't look like an Idol. Idol has also become more about the judges then the person singing. They also don't bash their contestants. The only time I ever watched Idol is when it's down to the last 5 singers. I don't want to hear people who can't even carry a note and make themselves look stupid. What a waste of time.

I don't think it matters which show you try out for. Opening a door for yourself to be discovered on either show is a good thing. Randy says that the contestants on Idol are "new" and that's a load of crap. Many of their contestants have tried other ways to be discovered prior to auditioning for Idol, so I think Randy should do some more research on his own contestants' backgrounds before he shoots his mouth off again.

I prefer The Voice. The only thing that drives me crazy is when the coaches know the contestant is a good singer, but they wait for or tell one of the other coaches to choose the singer.

I totally agree with Jason. I find him extremely annoying, and even though he does seem to have a great resume (as he is constantly reminding us) is he really that good? I've always wondered. Has a lot of it been luck? I don't know how I will find this out for sure, he seems to be respected in the industry. I'd never heard of him until Idol, the only Randy Jackson I'd ever heard of was one of the Jackson 5.

journey sold ocer 75million albums world wide, made 23 albums, and had 43 singles... maroon 5 has sold only 15 million world wide. randy jackson is irritating with his name dropping, and dawg, and all that, but he obviously knows his stuff. adam on the other hand just doesnt have the experience he does. period.

I'm with ya, but how much of that is really down to him? He did one album with them, after their biggest hits made history, and the one related tour. He can claim it if he wants to, but I'd say only very lightly.

In the past when American Idol had no competition, they were my choice. Now, the Voice is paving the way and much, much, better than American Idol. The contestants and the judges have better standards and I won't be surprise if in the next couple years will take the crown! I enjoy it more than I enjoy American Idol, without a doubt! It has less drama for sure and the judges are way better than those dof American Idol!!!!!!

I will watch which ever one until they do a Whitney Huston tribute, Really don't need to see country or rap stars do that or anything in between.
      • thejabber 3 months ago
One of the biggest country stars ever, Dolly Parton, wrote Whitney's biggest song. Sometimes the two do mesh.

Idol has had contestants who have had previous experience....when it started, it was people who never had a recording contract or been in a band or anything....just wanna be stars with talent. then, a the years went on, more and more contestants had failed contracts and a lot of experience....that was not what the show was about and why i don't watch it anymore....the voice is good....and they make no qualms about letting people know it is about 2nd and third chances at your dream....

one thing in common with both shows..they cut people with talent and keep people with little or no talent..poor judging in both shows...

The Voice - American Idol has so many bad performers to go through before the good ones and America's Got Talent is the same way. I usually don't watch any of them until at least the Semi Finals

the VOICE is purely hokey. Real singers yes, but a stupid format ,you have a judge who eliminates his own contestant after he chooses what they sing . Yea, just give the prize and forget the process .It's like watching sausage being made,it stinks.
      • emily 3 months ago
        yea you are completely right.
    • Jason Sheffield  •  3 months ago
He's 55 - is he ever going to grow up? Between the name dropping and spewing crap like "bro", "dude" and "dawg" it just makes him look desperate and pathetic.
      • maggie 3 months ago
The Voice shows extreme rudeness by keeping their backs to performers even when they're marginal. Have the decency to face people and give them positive critique.
      • Jason Sheffield 3 months ago
And that makes this man's pathetic attempts to appear young and "hip" okay?

If you want to talk about 'decency" call them by NAME not "dude" or "bro" or "dawg".
      • emily 3 months ago
i guess when you sell 75 million albums world wide, make 23 albums as a band, and have 43 singles like journey did, thats not desperate or pathetic, to me that means this man may have a clue as to what he is talking about... then we have maroon 5 who hasnt made a good album since his first..... by the way maroon 5 has sold 12 million albums total... okay then. randy jackson should be name dropping he IS somebody. while it may be irritating he does have the experience he brags about... tell adam to get some then come back in 25 years...experience is earned not given.

Hand down I love The Voice! The formatting can be a little different. As for America Idol, I haven't watched in about 3 years seeing as how it has become an irrelevant and a joke. All of their artist slip slowly into obscurity. Kelly's album only sold 538,000 copies thus far; All I ever Wanted just tipping at the one million mark. my December was a laugh as well with on 900,000 sales. Her first two albums broke the bank with Thankful going 2x platinum and Breakaway 6x platinum. After breakaway, she has been selling less and less albums, now ask yourself how relevant to these idols become and stay?

O My its all funny and it is just to push their shows,,either tune in or tune out its all up to you right?? They sit back and laugh all the way to the bank and have drinks together come on get real it is all Show Biz.......

American Idol use to be my fav..The VOICE has proven to be way better
    • thejabber  •  Beverly Hills, California  •  3 months ago
First time I've ever agreed with Randy Jackson. The Voice is too gimmicky, and most of the contestants are talentless and too old, or just plain weird, for a talent show. However Randy doesn't have any room to talk with that ugly, grandma looking, Steven Tyler haunting the AI stage..

the voice, american idol is old and boring!
