    Ratings Rat Race: ABC’s NBA Finals Slam Dunks NBC’s U.S. Open, Drops From 2011

    The Miami Heat beat the Oklahoma City Thunder last night in Game 3 of the NBA Finals and scored an overnight rating of 10.4. The game, which peaked to a 14.7 from 7:30-7:45 PM PT in overnight ratings for ABC, was the night’s highest-rated telecast (5.6/16) and drew 13.376 million total viewers. Based on fast nationals, however, that is actually down from last year’s Game 3 overnight (11.1) when Miami played the Dallas Mavericks. Overall, this year’s NBA Finals are averaging an 11.3 overnight rating compared with 2011’s 10.8. It is proving to be the highest-rated NBA championship series since 2004’s Detroit Pistons-LA Lakers matchup, and the second highest-rated series ever on ABC behind the all-time record holder, 2010′s Boston Celtics-LA Lakers showdown. The kickoff to ABC’s night of basketball was 8 PM’s Jimmy Kimmel Live (1.9/8) and the 8:30 PM NBA Countdown (2.6/9). ABC won the night in adults 18-49 and and total viewers (11.49 million).

    NBC aired the final round of U.S. Open Golf Championship (2.3/7) through primetime last night. With coverage starting at 4 PM ET and running until about 10:30, it was up 29% over 2011′s coverage. Based on live sports fast nationals approximates, yesterday’s final round pulled in 9.453 million total viewers. At 10:30, an Open postgame show mixed with Betty White’s Off Their Rockers for a 1.1/3.

    Except for 60 Minutes (1.0/4) at 7 PM, CBS had repeats of Blue Bloods (0.7/2), The Good Wife (0.5/1) and The Mentalist (0.8/2) Fox was all repeats with American Dad (0.8/3), The Cleveland Show (1.0/4), The Simpsons (1.2/4), Bob’s Burgers (1.2/4), Family Guy (1.6/5) and another American Dad (1.4/4).
