Ratings: Super Bowl XLVII Falls Shy of 2012′s Record, Late Start Tempers Elementary's Surge

Things may have gotten a bit dark midway through Super Bowl XLVII, but CBS’ coverage of the contest positively lit up the ratings — yet fell shy of matching the record numbers put up a year ago

UPDATE: With an average overnight household rating/share of 46.3/69, the Ravens’ win over the 49ers stands as the second-highest rated Super Bowl in 27 years, trailing 2012′s Giants-Patriots match-up by not even 2 percent.

In total audience, XLVII drew 107.4 million viewers, 3 percent below last year’s numbers yet marking the third most-watched program in TV history, trailing Super Bowls XLVI (111.3 mil) and XLV (111.0 mil).

CBS’ tabulations are not including the power outage from 8:41 to 9:11 pm EST.

The overnight household rating/share for XLVII marks a 1 percent gain over last year’s Giants/Patriots match-up. (That Super Bowl went on to be the most-watched TV program ever, with 111.3 million viewers.)

After the Big Game — with the latest start time ever for a Super Bowl lead-out — Elementary drew 20.8 million total viewers and a 7.8 demo rating, up 61 and 160 percent from its season averages. That said, those are the smallest numbers for any apres-Super Bowl program since American Dad in 2005 (15.2 mil/7.6), which itself led out of The Simpsons.

CBS, however, notes that Elementary outdrew the last show to air entirely outside of Sunday primetime, Alias in 2003 (17.4 mil/8.2, starting at 11:01pm).
