Castle found his muse at the NYPD and started to pen and publish his "Nikki Heat" series based on the real-life adventures of Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic).
"Castle" fans were amazed to discover Castle's books available online and in stores just after the books' releases on the show. This immediately led fans to question who actually wrote the Richard Castle novels available for purchase—since Richard Castle is of course a fictional character.
The true identity of the author is a mystery. Here are the top three suspects in the ongoing investigation:
Nathan Fillion plays Castle, and most of Fillion's fans consider him to be a creative genius. Fillion was deeply involved in the success and portrayal of anti-hero and protagonist Malcolm Reynolds on "Firefly" and like character Richard Castle, Fillion is known to be full of esoteric knowledge when it comes to technology and geekery.
It is highly unlikely that Fillion is the actual author of the Richard Castle novels. If he did write them, it would hardly serve as an advantage for the publisher to leave his name off of the cover—Fillion's authorship would only increase readership.
Fillion has not penned a book before; a major publisher would be unlikely to entrust the writing of a novel to him. Lastly, Fillion probably makes more money for the "Castle" franchise as an actor and by making appearances and tweeting than he could as an author.
It's been suggested and insinuated that the Richard Castle ghostwriter has made an appearance on "Castle." While Castle hosts a regular group of writers for poker games and crime-solving, the writing style of the "Nikki Heat" Richard Castle novels doesn't seem to match any of them.
A reference to author Tom Straw appeared on the jacket description about Richard Castle, leading several bloggers and "Castle" fans to believe that Straw is the real mystery man. One blogger even posted a screen capture of Straw appearing on "Castle."
In the past, show writers and creators have penned similar pseudonym books. Richard Castle isn't the first fictional character to have penned his own series. "Castle" is often compared to the long-running, wildly successful "Murder She Wrote" series, which starred Angela Lansbury as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher.
The premise of "Murder She Wrote" and the mystery writer protagonist's involvement in solving murders aren't the only things shared by these shows—Jessica Lansbury also authors books—and has published more than 25 of them. However, it is a fact that Donald Bain was the real writer behind the Fletcher novels as well as the television show.
