Although "True Blood" has consistently shown that it's one of the most successful series in HBO history, the most recent season has taken its fantastic nature to a whole new level. Indeed, the fifth season has highlighted what it is that we love so much about the series and why it continues to be one of the most addictive shows on television.
The Return of RussellWithout a doubt, one of the most amazing parts of Season 5 is the triumphant return of Russell, who's cunning, powerful, and devastatingly charming. Russell is one of the most compelling characters the show has ever produced, either villain or hero. As a result, fans cannot help but watch him as he continues to spin his own plots and consume any fairy who comes into his immediate space. If there is one thing that really sets this season apart and has given it its particular strength, it would have to be the dynamic and dangerous Russell.
The AuthorityOn a similar note, this season has been marked by the increased presence of the Authority, with Salome, Nora, et al providing hours of excellent plotting and exciting killing. There's really nothing like seeing a lot of vampires scheming against one another and trying to gain the upper hand in a power struggle that has shown itself to be as dangerous to the vampires as it is to the humans who may be their victims. Fortunately, the presence of the Authority has also given us some of the most interesting vampire characters, as well.
BillFinally, we have to mention Bill, who has really come into his own this season. His dangerous descent into religious extremism has been one of the highlights of this season, as disturbing as it is fascinating to watch. The fact that he would so willingly and easily turn against those that he loves not only shows us how dangerous religious extremism can be, but also that there is a darkness at the heart of Bill that we are just now getting to see more of.
Clearly, there is a lot to cheer for and enjoy in this most recent season of "True Blood." Let's just hope that the show keeps its storylines focused so that the sixth season can continue giving us what we want out of this blood- and sex-soaked drama.
