'Revenge' Beats Sophomore Slump, '666 Park' Gets Odd Victory in Latest DVR Ratings

DVR growth isn't always enough. Live+7 data is in for the sixth week of the TV season, just three days after the broadcast networks' biggest percentage grower was canceled.

ABC's 666 Park Avenue, axed Friday along with fellow freshmen Last Resort and CBS' Partners, saw a 77 percent boost for its Nov. 4 episode. That's more movement than any other show that week. With demo growth of a whole point (from a 1.3 to a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49), it almost entered the top 10 series in overall DVR contribution -- though it still had the lowest cumulative score of any series in the top 25 time-delayed growers. Season-to-date, it was improving 47 percent (roughly 0.8 points) for a middling 2.5 adults rating.

Data for several series isn't available for week six, which saw many sidelined by Hurricane Sandy pre-emptions, but the first two months of the 2012-13 TV season have been awfully kind to one returning series in particular.

Revenge, which moved from Wednesdays to Sundays this season, is beating the dreaded sophomore ratings slump by all standards. Compared to the same six weeks last year, the ABC drama is averaging a tenth of a point higher in Live+Same Day viewings for a 2.8 adults rating. Modest, yes -- but when considering Live+7 data, Revenge is up eight percent (4.0 rating over a 3.7 rating) over last year.

The growth is even more impressive when the second-year ratings for fellow other high-profile sophomore series, New Girl and 2 Broke Girls, are taken into consideration.

Six weeks into the 2011-12 season, Fox's New Girl was averaging a 4.5 rating with adults 18-49 in Live+SD and a whopping 6.0 in Live+7. This season, it's down to a 2.7 adults rating in Tuesday viewings and a 4.1 after a week's worth of DVR.

2 Broke Girls, which benefited from an unusual boost last year due to Ashton Kutcher's first year leading Two and a Half Men, is also down more than a point. The CBS comedy is averaging a 3.5 adults rating in Live+SD and a 4.9 rating in Live+7, down from last season's respective 4.9 and 5.8 ratings.

Another buzzy sophomore, ABC's Sunday powerhouse Once Upon a Time, is also down from this time last year. But its late October 2011 launch means an accurate comparison is still several weeks off.

As for older returning series, two veterans are proving to have even sturdier legs than they did last year. The Big Bang Theory, even with last season's first six weeks 4.8 adults rating in Live+SD, is up in DVR viewership. The CBS comedy is averaging a 6.8 rating among adults 18-49 in Live+7 over the 6.2 rating it was bringing in this time last year. And Grey's Anatomy, down a tenth of a point to 3.6 adults rating same day viewing, has managed to improve in Live+7. The ninth season is averaging a 5.4 rating with 18-49-ers after DVR additions, up a tenth of a point from the same time last year.
