Damon has been attracted to Elena from the moment he met her. At first, he was attracted to her because she was the dead ringer to his first love, Catherine. In fact, she is Catherine's Doppelganger, which is "The Vampire Diaries" term for double. However, Damon was never able to act on his feelings toward Elena because Elena instantly fell for his brother, Stefan.
Stefan was always considered the good Salvatore brother. Damon was the mysterious bad one. Then Stefan saved Damon's life and became compelled by the evil Klaus. Once this happened, everything in their lives changed. Suddenly, Stefan was doing evil things and Damon was trying to clean up after him.
Finally, the spell was broken. Stefan no longer had to do Klaus's bidding. However, everyone still assumes that Stefan still has no humanity. Elena still thinks there is no future for them.
All would be all right, even if Stefan wasn't acting normal, if it wasn't for the fact that Klaus was on the loose and that he was dangerous. Everyone was in danger, especially Elena and everyone she loved. This kept Elena on edge, as she waited for him to reappear. Finally, he did and he told Damon what he wanted.
Klaus wanted what Stefan took from him. He wanted the bodies of his family back and he warned of the danger that would come if Damon did not help him. His first act was to compel Elena's brother, Jeremy, into standing in the middle of the street while a car comes crashing into him. However, Jeremy's friend and guardian pushes Jeremy out of the way in time. The car strikes him instead. Luckily, he is wearing a protective ring.
While Elena is handling Jeremy and his crisis, Damon finds Stefan and learns that he does have Klaus's dead family. He also learns that Stefan did not betray him. Stefan tells Damon that he would have died that night, if Klaus had been killed. The hybrids had orders to kill Damon if Klaus had been killed.
Damon gets angry. He did not enjoy the idea that Stefan gets to be the hero, once again.
Later, he tells Elena the real reason Stefan did not help them kill Klaus. She stares at him with big eyes. She seems confused. For a long time, she had been thinking that Stefan, her Stefan, had no humanity left inside him. Now, it sounds like he does. Her eyes seem to be asking if there were still something left of her Stefan.
Then she realized Damon was beside her. She has been growing closer to Damon. Damon has been the one she has been able to count on while Stefan was by Klaus's side. Now she looks confused.
Then Damon states that if he has to feel guilty, he wanted to do something. Finally, he kisses her. Elena returns the kiss. Then he walks off, leaving her alone on her front porch.
Could this signal a new beginning between Elena and Damon? Could this signal the end? Personally, this writer thinks it may be time for Elena to go to the wild side and give Damon a chance.
