"Revolution" aired its second episode, " Chained Heat," on Monday night, and it started out with a flashback to just one week after the blackout hit the country. A young Charlie is being dressed for the long walk out of the city and into the countryside. Charlie's dad grabs a gun, while Charlie's mom asks her daughter to perform an important task.
"I need you to be a big sister. Your job, Charlie, is not not let go of your brother's hand."
Charlie still feels that sense of responsibility, even years down the line, which is why she's pushing Miles so hard to rescue Danny. But Miles won't try to attempt a rescue of his nephew without more help, so the group travels to Pontiac, Illinois, in search of a woman named Nora Clayton.
After fighting off a bounty hunter and his team with some amazing swordplay and knife work, Miles learns that Nora is part of a chain gang at a prison camp. He needs Nora because "she's good at blowing stuff up," and rescuing Danny might involve taking on the militia directly.
Miles and Charlie go to get Nora, while Aaron and Maggie decide to start their trek to meet a woman, Grace Beaumont; the woman who helped Danny last week. Aaron hopes that Grace can fix the laws of physics and repair the manmade damage that caused the blackout. But by the end of the episode, Grace is confronted by a mysterious man, Randall, and is likely dead.
The mystery surrounding the pendants at this point is less about how they work and more about why they weren't used earlier. If Grace and Charlie's dad had the ability to turn the power back on, why didn't they do it years ago?
Charlie has another run-in with Nate, who reveals that his real name isn't Nate; his true name is still a mystery. She outsmarts him and handcuffs him to a post, then goes on her way.
Charlie and Miles find Nora, but she doesn't need or want their help escaping; she got caught on purpose so she could get close enough to the camp to steal a sniper rifle. Charlie offers to help steal the rifle by killing a man. Despite being reluctant to kill the bounty hunter earlier in the episode, she's willing to kill now to save the people who are being worked to death in the camp.
She pulls the trigger and kills a total of two men during the mission. Her willingness to kill proves that she is more like her mother than her father; a flashback showed her mother willing to kill a man who was stealing their food after the blackout.
Charlie's mother is actually at the center of the surprise ending of this episode: Charlie thinks her mom is dead, but her mom is alive and being kept under lock and key by Sebastian Monroe.
