The Robin pregnancy angle did not last very long on "How I Met Your Mother." One week after Robin revealed to Barney that she was pregnant, we found out it was a false alarm. Not only that, but we found out that Robin is unable to have children. It was hinted early in the series that Robin never had kids and this episode confirmed that. It was easily one of the saddest episodes in the show's history. Overall, I'm happy with the fact that Robin won't be pregnant this season. However, there are still lots of possibilities for "How I Met Your Mother" regarding Robin and her relationships.
The episode was done in a clever fashion. We see Robin narrating to her future children about her finding out she was pregnant. It was a nice parody of Ted doing the same with his future children. Of course, in Robin's case this was only a fantasy. In a pretty sad moment, we learn that Robin was just imagining talking to her future children. This episode confirmed that Robin will never have kids. At the end of the episode, Future Ted reveals to his children that Robin would have a great career and never be alone. I took that to mean that she always has friends, but it could mean something else.
In Robin's fantasy, Barney was the father of her children. I thought that was pretty interesting. It could be because Barney was fresh in Robin's mind given that he would have been the father if she was pregnant. However, it could also be a hint at things to come. Just because Robin can't have kids doesn't mean the book is closed on her and Barney. In fact, it could show that they are a perfect couple. We know Barney isn't crazy about having kids. Maybe this is another indication that the two will wind up together.
This was a pretty somber episode but I understand why the producers did it. This was an important development for Robin's character. This revelation should have far reaching consequences for her relationships with Kevin and Barney. I wonder if and when she will tell either of them. This sets up some interesting story lines for the rest of the season. I have to think that Kevin and Nora will be back in the picture soon. I wouldn't be surprised if this news helps spark new story lines for both relationships.
