The phrase "nice guys finish last" is true of both the dating scene and the reality TV world . Year after year, fans are crushed when their favorite "nice guy" contestant loses out to a far more conniving, villainous competitor. While these nice guys didn't always finish dead last, they all failed to win their respective competitions.
Christopher Palu, "Project Runway" Season 10Without question, Chris was the nicest competitor on Season 10. He was level-headed, sweet-tempered, and a fierce designer. It was a shame he only placed fourth, as his designs were strong and he was very deserving of acclaim. Much of the time, the "Runway" winner is kind of a nasty person. Examples include when Season 8's Gretchen Jones won out over the lovable Mondo Guerra, or when Season 3's Jeff Sebelia came out on top over two nice contestants: the kind Michael Knight and nice gal Uli Herzner.
The curse of the "nice guy" even plagues some designers in the "All Star" seasons. Peach Carr, though beloved in her original season, never came close to the finals. In the second installment of "All Stars," Peach was the very first to get eliminated.
Matthew Hickl, "The Bachelorette" Season 2Many of the relationships on "The Bachelorette" aren't built to last. Most famously, the first Bachelorette, Trista, is still with the man she chose at the end of the competition. Sadly, Meredith Phillips chose poorly in Season 2 when she selected the dynamic but unstable Ian McKee over nice guy Matthew Hickl. Other Bachelorettes also passed over the "nice guys" in their respective seasons, like when DeAnna Pappas picked Jesse Csincsak. Some gals are just too afraid to pick a nice guy for themselves and end up in a cycle of bad relationships.
Bryan Voltaggio and Kevin Gillespie, "Top Chef" Season 6The sixth season of "Top Chef" was set in Las Vegas, and there were plenty of big surprises and even bigger gambles. The smart bet was on Bryan Voltaggio to win: In addition to being level-headed, creative, and cool under pressure, he was a nice guy who would respect his kitchen team and coax the best out of each of them. The finale came down to Bryan, fellow nice guy Kevin, and Bryan's jerk of a brother, Michael. Kevin came in third with Bryan in second place, and Michael winning the whole shebang to the disgust of many fans.
