Will Season 13 of 'Law and Order: SVU' Be the Last?

Since 1999, "Law and Order: SVU" has ruled the scene of police dramas on television. As the seasons progressed, the show never really went through any major changes. Fans tend to like stability among their favorite shows and "Law and Order: SVU" has always been a show they could count on. Recently, there have been a lot of changes announced and fans fear that the upcoming changes may be the end to the show. Here are some of the recent changes that may contribute to the demise of "Law and Order: SVU."

Mariska Hargitay Getting Less Screen Time

This has been a long time coming. When Hargitay decided to resign for Season 13, she requested less screen time in order to spend more time with her family. This is understandable, especially since she is a working mom. It is rumored that mid season Detective Benson will receive a promotion, explaining the loss of her on screen time.

    Christopher Meloni Will Not Return

There was some speculation that Detective Stabler would not be returning by the way the Season 12 finale played out. At that point, Meloni had not come to an agreement with the show. A few days after the finale aired, it was announced he would not be returning. Stabler has been a character on the show since the beginning. The powers that be may want to rethink giving Meloni whatever it is he wanted!

Jennifer Love Hewitt To Replace Hargitay

While this is merely a rumor (it has not been confirmed or denied), fans are upset at this prospect. Hewitt is best known for her roles on "Party of Five" and "The Ghost Whisperer." While she wouldn't be literally replacing Hargitay, she would be taking up the screen time Hargitay gave up. There is going to be a new Lead Detective when Benson is promoted and Hewitt's character would take that spot.

    Breaking Up The Power Couple

Since Benson and Stabler have been paired with one another, their chemistry has been off the charts. Fans have always held out hope that the two would be romantically linked, even if it was the end of the show. Big changes among main characters can be catastrophic for the show and ratings.Breaking up a pair that has been the main focus of the show for years, is not something fans are prepared to handle well. Without these two leading the way, the show most likely will fail within one or two seasons.
