But some episodes stand out as better examples of what makes the show great and episode 18, "Boys Night," was one of those wonderfully written episodes.
Perhaps it was the guest appearance of Nathan Lane, who plays Mitchel land Cam's dapper friend, Pepper Saltman.
The character Pepper first appeared on "Modern Family" during the show's first season. Cam and Mitchell were scheduled to attend one of Pepper's brunch events and didn't want to go. An earthquake gave them the excuse they needed to cancel, but Pepper then showed up at their house to make sure they were OK. In this episode, Pepper is limited to one scene. But the show's writers and producers must have had an inkling that fans wanted more.
Episode 18 opens with Cam and Mitchell preparing for a night out with their friends, Pepper, Crispin and Longonus. When Jay unrepentantly shows up at the same bar, he is invited over for drinks and it doesn't take long before he becomes one of the gang.
Sharing a love for music, Pepper and Jay hit it off and after having a few drinks, makes a date to drive to Palm Springs the following day with Pepper to look at a friend's record collection. The scenes with Pepper are hilarious. Lane plays the character to perfection and each of the characters he interacts with on the show, including Cam, Mitchell, Gloria, Jay, Crispin and Longonus, are perfectly scripted.
Hopefully "Modern Family" writers will write more episodes featuring Pepper. While the character isn't related to the family, like Haley's boyfriend, he is an important supporting character that helps to showcase some of "Modern Family's" main characters, bringing out those character traits that fans have come to love. Pepper's character is also the one most likely to support a spin-off or related show centered on his character and his life. A show about Pepper would certainly become another hit for ABC and another way to extend the life of "Modern Family."
