"Suits" added a layer of intrigue in its Season 2 premiere episode "She Knows." Now, in the episode "The Choice," the show is neck-deep with intrigue as Jessica (Gina Torres) and Daniel Hardman (David Constabile) go to war. The episode was more serious than usual -- more of a drama than a dramedy. There were still a few laughs, but also some tear-welling moments. "Suits" always does the unexpected.
Jessica is met with an uncomfortable elevator encounter with Mike (Patrick J. Adams) in which he starts babbling about being like her son. It is a hilarious moment, followed quickly by a tense moment when Jessica sees that Hardman is taking over a corner of the floor and renovating it to be his office without telling her. The war has begun. Jessica is shocked as workers take away her silver tea cart while Louis (Rick Hoffman) worries that the color of the wall is tan instead of taupe. That man has strange priorities.
Rachel (Meghan Markle) tries to ignore Mike because she thinks he got her drunken message while he was still with Jenny (Vanessa Ray). Mike has just recently gotten the message, and wants to be with Rachel now that Jenny broke it off. When she tries to walk away, he plants a kiss on her mouth right in the middle of the office. Finally! They both look happier than ever!
Jessica wants Harvey (Gabriel Macht) to get the Pearson Hardman bankruptcy guy, Paul Porter (Michael Cristofer), on her side so she can survive a vote for managing partner now that Hardman is gunning for her job. Harvey has other ideas. Mike and Harvey work out a great deal for the client, while turning Porter against Jessica. Jessica forbids Harvey to tell the client the truth about the deal. It's just not Harvey's nature to lose, nor to lie to the client, so he tells him the truth. Jessica sees it as a huge betrayal of her trust while Harvey sees it as a win now that he's gotten the real estate department at the firm on her side with the deal.
Mike wants to tell Rachel everything, but Harvey forbids it. It's the first time Harvey has shown anger rather than sarcasm concerning Mike's job, but Mike doesn't get it until Donna (Sarah Rafferty) informs him of how Harvey threatened to leave if Mike was fired. When Mike asks how he can work with her if he breaks it off, Donna clearly speaks from experience (with Harvey?) when she says he will eventually forget about it. The surprising part is that he takes their advice and heartbreakingly breaks up with Rachel. Sadly, she believes it is because he thinks he's too good for her.
Louis gets a Dictaphone he's always wanted from Hardman. He immediately and easily switches to Hardman's side. It becomes very clear why Harvey was always Jessica's favorite despite the fact that he often goes against her wishes. At least he is loyal. Jessica seems crushed that Louis seemed to switch sides. She feels completely alone until Harvey wheels her tea cart into her office, informing her that she is not.
