"Supernatural" Season 8 begins Oct. 3, and a lot has happened since Sam and Dean Winchester began their journey. Characters have come and gone, while loved ones died and came back to life. The one thing that has remained the same is the humor and the blood. Here's a look at each of the most loved "Supernatural" characters throughout the years and where they might be in Season 8.
At the beginning of Season 1 of "Supernatural," Dean Winchester was a wise-cracking violent hunter with great taste in music. By the end of Season 8, Dean Winchester is a wise-cracking violent hunter with great taste in music. The only real change is that Dean is now carrying tons of baggage. He died in Season 3 after being mauled by hellhounds, spent time torturing and being tortured in hell, and returned to find out he's the archangel Michael's meat suit. During all this, he's seen his entire family die, including his brother.
Where is Dean at the beginning of Season 8? Out of purgatory. The show plans to explain how he got out using flashbacks.
Sam has also been the more serious brother, and that hasn't changed in eight seasons. Maybe it's difficult for him to make jokes considering he's died several times over the course of the series and was Satan's true vessel. He never stayed dead for long, sometimes for only a few moments. Sam Winchester spent time in hell, locked up with Lucifer. Getting out of hell cost him his soul, and Sam became a much more serious fellow. He also became much more violent and uncaring. Sam has always had special powers and could even see Lucifer when he wasn't really there.
Where is Sam at the beginning of Season 8? Reuniting with Dean and hanging out with the new prophet.
Viewers first met Bobby Singer at the end of Season 1. He forges a bond with Sam and Dean, and he becomes their father figure. Bobby has faced many monsters and has stayed alive because of his knowledge and skills. In the middle of Season 7, Bobby dies from a head shot wound. He decides to stay behind as a ghost and continues to help the boys. That is until being a ghost makes him a little evil. At the end of Season 7, Bobby has Sam and Dean burn his flask.
Where is Bobby at the beginning of Season 8? Gone for good? Fans love Bobby, so it seems reasonable he'll be back in flashbacks or in some other capacity.
Castiel makes his first appearance in Season 4 of "Supernatural." He is the angel that pulled Dean out of hell. Castiel changes several times during the series. He starts out determined to serve God, only to realize that God doesn't care. After drinking an entire liquor store, Castiel gives up his vows to God and helps the Winchesters. His desire to save humanity goes out of control, and Castiel becomes a monster after taking in the souls of purgatory. He becomes a vengeful god. The Leviathans destroy Castiel, and he ends up crazy -- to put it lightly. The poor angel Castiel has had so many personalities.
Where is Castiel at the beginning of Season 8? Purgatory. It is unknown if he has left purgatory, but he did leave Dean to fend for himself.
Crowley began his role in "Supernatural" as a crossroads demon. He's been trouble and help for the Winchester's ever since. Crowley is one of the demons that will join whichever side he feels will give him the most gain. He is loyal to no one but himself, and uses Sam, Dean, Bobby, and even Dick Roman to reach his goals.
Where is Crowley at the beginning of Season 8? Looking for the prophet and the stone tablets. The newest tablet explains how to close off all of hell forever.
