As Castiel on "Supernatural," Misha Collins revealed himself as an egotistical god in the season finale. Is Castiel a benevolent replacement for the show's missing god or is he drunk with power? Will Castiel continue to help Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) in future episodes? Viewers will have to wait until next season to find out, but Collins' loyal fans are showing plenty of love in the meantime.
In real life, Collins is a Twitterverse god and currently has 198,170 followers. He leveraged his Twitter influence to rally fans for a philanthropic purpose in 2009. The movement evolved and his "minions" continue to work together to support Random Acts, a nonprofit charity performing acts of kindness across the globe.
The charity accepts donations and earns money from selling swag through various Cafe Press stores. Funds go to a variety of causes, big and small, ranging from giving a child a new violin to supporting tsunami relief efforts in Japan.
Hope to HaitiIn 2010, the organization launched a relief effort to help Jacmel, Haiti recover from its devastating earthquake. They rebuilt a dental clinic and refurbished an orphanage. They also donated 1,600 tools to a carpentry school for training students to construct more stable buildings. A team is returning to Jacmel this summer to build a sustainable fish farm and green multipurpose community center to help feed, house and educate needy children.
So far, donors have given $147, 991 to Hope 2 Haiti via Crowdrise. Collins is rewarding the first 40 people who raise $5,000 with an opportunity to join him and the team in Haiti. Matt Cohen, who played a young John Winchester, is also joining the group.
Participants who raise $1,000 are eligible to win a free trip to Haiti. Fundraisers who raise more than $1,000 will receive a mix CD featuring some of Collins' favorite music, one of his favorite novels with a personal thank you note and an autographed piece of Random Acts swag. And while Castiel struggles with simple gadgets like cell phones, tech-savvy Collins uses the latest gear to update fans. He pledged to give his personal iPad to the donor who raises the most money for Hope to Haiti on Crowdrise. Visit therandomact.org for more information.
