Monday night's "Teen Wolf" episode "Frayed" gave fans quite a scare at the outset, when Scott (Tyler Posey) is grief-stricken that his friend Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) is dead. Cue the wolf-like howls of Derek fans. Of course, nothing is ever quite what it seems in this show, so without a body, viewers are left wondering what really happened... until the end, that is.
The field trip of doom
Isaac (Daniel Sharman), Boyd (Sinqua Walls), Scott, Stiles (Dylan O'Brien), Danny (Keahu Kahuanui), and Ethan (one of the alpha twins, played by Charlie Carver) are all cooped up together on a bus. The tension seems to be higher than normal, especially for the usually calm Boyd. Scott isn't looking so great either, and we soon learn why: He has several large alpha scratches across his torso that are not healing, and he "can't believe that Derek is dead."
The story of what exactly happened to Derek is told through a series of flashbacks, artfully placed out of order to build suspense. The first thing we learn is that Scott knows Allison (Crystal Reed) has been secretly helping her werewolf buddies from the sidelines. Then, Deucalion (Gideon Emery) appears in the elevator as Scott is leaving.
Putting all the flashbacks in order, Scott learns that Deucalion lives right above Allison. Derek and his pack already know this, however, and are planning to take down Deucalion and his alpha pack in a surprise attack.
Scott takes it upon himself to meet with Deucalion alone just to talk things out, but Derek was expecting him to do that. Derek was hoping that he could bring his entire pack, catching Deucalion alone and off guard. He hopes that killing the leader of the alpha pack will separate the rest of the pack, but Peter (Ian Bohen) ominously suggests that cutting off the head of the Hydra may cause two more to grow in its place.
They can't get that far, however, because Deucalion has a surprise of his own: He also brings his entire alpha pack, and Derek with his betas are absolutely no match for them. Derek is easily defeated, with Deucalion giving him a choice between watching his sister die and killing Boyd to become part of Deucalion's alpha pack.
Allison intervenes to save the day, using her bow and arrow to shoot flash bombs down on them, momentarily incapacitating them and causing confusion. Scott uses the moment to attack Ennis (Brian Patrick Wade), the most muscly of the alpha pack. Somehow, Scott's power matches that of Ennis, and Allison and Deucalion take notice as Scott momentarily becomes an alpha.
It's unclear whether Derek realizes what just happened, but he immediately steps in to save his friend, fighting Ennis and pulling him off a ledge. Scott hurries to the edge to see Ennis and Derek far below, apparently dead.
It's not what it seems
Peter and Cora (Adelaide Kane) later discuss their trust issues over the missing bodies of Ennis and Derek. They theorize that only one of them survived and dragged or finished off the other. Cue another heart sink as Ennis appears next, alive but in poor shape. His other alpha-pack mates bring him to the veterinarian to get patched up.
The doc agrees after some coercion, only to have Deucalion walk in and crush his skull with one bare hand. This may be the first glimpse into how Deucalion is able to be the leader of an alpha pack: He killed all his betas, then killed alphas within his alpha pack, making him stronger and stronger. It may also drive some of his alphas to the other side, however, as Kali (Felisha Terrell) is completely grief-stricken upon learning of Ennis's death.
Scott needs Allison
Before Scott was able to give himself a power boost against Ennis, Ennis had scratched him. The problem is that the wound is not healing and is actually becoming worse. Lydia (Holland Roden) suggests that his grief over losing Derek and believing it is his fault is causing him to believe he is dying.
Allison decides to stitch Scott up to help him believe that he can heal his wound. The trick seems to work, but it may be more than just a trick. Allison has made Scott stronger in the past, and now it seems to be so again. Was her presence the reason Scott was able to equal Ennis on strength?
Is Scott a leader, too?
At one point in the episode, Scott has a quick flash of Dr. Deaton telling him that he should lead the pack. Since Scott seems to be on the road to becoming an alpha, is it possible that Derek and he could both be alpha leaders without having to kill the other?
In the last episode, Scott was able to stop Isaac's frantic attack on Allison after being locked in the broom closet by yelling his name in a wolfy-sounding voice. He was able to do the same thing again in this episode when Isaac began to attack Ethan. Perhaps Allison is giving him that strength, or perhaps his bromance with Isaac is adding to his strength. Maybe it's both.
In the final scene, Derek comes to Ms. Blake, his favorite teacher, for help. Derek had saved Ms. Blake in the episode "Fireflies," and she clearly has a crush on bad-boy Derek. Now he is dying right in front if her. This is going to be very interesting. Can Derek gain strength from a human as Scott gains from Allison, or will she have the opposite effect on him?
