According to Executive Producer/Judge Nigel Lythgoe, Fox has officially canceled the results portion of "So You Think You Can Dance." No word yet on how this will be handled, however, but instead of two episodes, "So You Think You Can Dance" will now be regulated to one per week. The reality hit has been on the air for eight seasons, and although this does not signify the end, fans may worry that changing a format that has worked for so long might affect the overall quality. Of course, this could also be a blessing in disguise, since results shows tend to be nothing more than filler up until the final moments. Here is a look at some of the possible pros and cons of the new format change.
Pro: No more filler
I love a musical guest as much as the next guy, however sometimes I find myself fast forwarding through the performance, especially if there isn't any worthwhile dancing involved. Eliminating the results portion would definitely cut back on non-dance related guests, thought I would definitely miss the professional dancers that occasionally go on the show to showcase their genre. It adds to the spirit of the show, and allows the audience to see something that they might not have experienced before.
Con: No more group routines?
A big con (and I mean huge) of eliminating the results show would occur if the group numbers went with them. Every week I would wait in anticipation to see what the featured choreographer would come up with. Some weeks I was blown away (such as with the "Ramalama" and "Circus" numbers), while others left me cold ("Cell Block Tango"), but overall it was a treat to see all the remaining dancers work together to produce something magical. I just don't see how it would work if they tried to fit it all into one episode, and will sorely miss the group dance if it does, in fact, go away.
Con: Possible voting changes
This one I am on the fence about, especially since I am simply speculating possible outcomes. I really don't think the voting process will be tweaked around too much, since the judges normally have final say in the beginning. Several things could possibly happen. One, the judges might pick the eliminated contestant each week, with America choosing the winner in the end. Though this might make sense logistically, I have the feeling that such a decision would not sit too well with viewers. Another would be to have the elimination take place at the beginning of the new episode. Again, I'm not sure how this would be done, especially in the age of spoilers and easy access to information. After all, the eliminated contestant would have to know beforehand, that way they are not wasting time rehearsing a routine that won't be shown. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the producers decide to do with this one.
What do you think of the "So You Think You Can Dance" results show being canceled?
