In her article, Sellitti argues that "'Game of Thrones' ranks somewhere on the Girl Dislike scale between NASCAR and that National Geographic show where the guy sticks his hand in a catfish's mouth."
She goes on to say that girls find the show "gross" because of the incest and constant nudity. Sellitti adds that the show is hard to follow, and that it "reminds us of the kids that used to play magic cards in the cafeteria."
Both male and female fans of the show reacted with outrage at Sellitti's article. Making a sweeping statement about an entire gender does have a tendency to ruffle some feathers -- especially given the fact that Sellitti is just plain wrong. Here are some reasons that female TV fans actually love "Game of Thrones."
1. The complex relationships and storylines are immensely rewarding. In her article, Sellitti writes, "Brilliantly developed storylines are great, but whipping out a dry erase board and Venn diagrams to figure it all out isn't our idea of a good time. Unless we're talking about soap operas. Those are perfectly fine."
Sellitti undermines her own argument by adding the caveat that women actually do love complex storylines based on relationships, as in a soap opera. If some female fans do feel lost when watching the show, it is probably because they didn't watch it from beginning. The complex relationships on this series are easy to get invested in and immensely rewarding.
2. There's plenty of eye candy for the ladies.Sellitti argues that "Thrones" is just a parade of naked women. While that is certainly true, it overlooks the fact that there are also tons of handsome men on the show. Kit Harington, Sean Bean, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jason Momoa, and Harry Lloyd are all incredibly handsome. Let's not forget: This is the TV show that turned Peter Dinklage into a sex symbol overnight.
3. The quality is superb.Let's face it, if a TV show doesn't have solid acting and an engaging story, it won't be long for this world. The production value has always been high on "Thrones" -- not just in terms of lush visual effects and costumes, but in terms of quality acting and emotionally charged scripts.
4. There are strong female characters.Too often, TV shows lack a strong, relatable, and realistic female character. Thankfully, despite being "a show for boys," "Game of Thrones" is jam-packed with amazing female characters. Watching Daenerys transform from a weak noble pawn to a powerful leader is truly inspirational, and characters like Brienne and Ygritte are easy to root for. Hey, there's a reason Arya is one of the fastest-growing baby names in America, and that reason is simple. Men and women both love "Game of Thrones."
