Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are deciding to divorce after five years together.
This surely comes as a shock to those that remember Tom leaping on Oprah's couch and declaring his love for Katie. And it's hard to believe that the former "Dawson's Creek" star is letting go of Tom after telling Seventeen magazine that she'd dreamed of marrying the actor as a young girl. However, the couple hasn't been spotted together since February. This time apart has probably been extremely tough on their poor 6-year-old daughter Suri.
Of course the couple hasn't given a reason for their divorce decision, but it's hard not to wonder if the way Tom has been throwing himself into his work ended up taking a toll on his marriage. After all, Katie wants to have a career, too, so she can't simply follow her husband all around the world while he films the many movies he's been attaching himself to.
Tom is currently in Iceland filming his movie "Oblivion," and it looks like he's going to be a bit lonely spending his 50thbirthday in the country on July 3 - he'd planned on celebrating by going hiking with his family.
The futuristic sci-fi film about a world where people live above the clouds is just one of the many projects that Tom is throwing himself into after "Rock of Ages" turned out to be a box office flop. Sadly the bejeweled codpiece from the movie that Tom gifted Katie with obviously didn't impress her much, either.
Tom's other upcoming projects include "All You Need is Kill," a sci-fi movie about a soldier who lives the same day over and over again after being killed during a war against aliens. And in "Jack Reacher" he'll be an ex-serviceman investigating a sniper attack.
The actor has said that he's interested in starring in "Mission: Impossible 5," and he's attached himself to a reboot of Hugh Jackman's monster hunter movie "Van Helsing." He's also hoping to remake the classic Western "The Magnificent Seven."
Tom is even hoping to revisit one of the movies that helped make him such a big star with "Top Gun 2" - it could be the perfect way for him to start over at age 50.
Maybe Tom is taking on roles in so many action movies because of his age, and maybe he feels like he has something to prove after how unpopular "Rock of Ages" proved to be. However, it's very possible that his heavy workload put a strain on his marriage.
So why do you think Tom and Katie decided to call it quits?
