Sexual tension drives most plots on TV. Watch any successful television show, no matter the genre, and you'll find a couple to root for. And "Grey's Anatomy" is no different. From the very first episode, fans have been cheering Derek and Meredith on, waiting for them to finally get together. And now that they have, we love them even more. Here are the top 5 reasons why Derek and Meredith are and will always be the fan favorites on "Grey's Anatomy."
They Respect Each Other
Too many times we see television couples giving something up to be with the one they love. Whether they move, change jobs or somehow alter their personality, the message is that one must change to find true love. But Derek and Meredith have stayed true to who they are throughout their relationship. They've both grown (especially Meredith), but the growth was personal, not change for the sake of a relationship. They're both still surgeons and both have retained the essence of who they are while making their relationship work, even to the point of Derek sharing his bed with Meredith and Christina, because he knows his wife needs that friendship, too.
They're Stronger Together Than Apart
One of the hallmarks of a great relationship is that both people make the other better and stronger. It's not about completing one another, but rather lending the support to help the other person be the best he can be. Derek and Meredith do this for each other. They're still the same people when they're together as apart, but their teamwork as a couple makes them stronger. Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo play this so well, which is why fans could never accept the times when they were apart for whatever reason.
They Accept Each Other's Faults
Derek has seen Meredith through all of her "dark and twisty" places and out the other side. And Meredith has stood by Derek through Addison and Rose, allowing him to make his choices. Both know the other isn't perfect, but the relationship isn't about fixing the other person. Instead, Derek and Meredith love each other despite their faults, and are able to laugh at each other and themselves and move on. Through refreshing honesty, they've seen each other through hard times and become a stronger couple for it.
They Don't Need the Fairy Tale
Christina was willing to play a princess for a day to marry Burke, and Alex and Izzy had the fairytale wedding fans enjoyed. But Derek and Meredith don't need the pomp and circumstance to prove their love because the relationship is more important than a fantasy. Instead, their marriage is nothing more than a post-it note, a simple declaration of their love and commitment to one another. And while it would be nice for fans to see them officially married, even at City Hall, it's refreshing that they'll never need a Cinderella moment to show just how much they love each other.
They're Each Other's Biggest Fan No Matter What
Meredith and Derek have helped each other through two clinical trials, Meredith's drowning, Derek's shooting, infertility and the deaths of parents and friends. It hasn't always been pretty, but in the end, they keep coming back to each other. Even when others have questioned their relationship, they've stayed true to the fact that they're better and stronger with each other than apart. They trust each other, and it's that bond that keeps fans cheering them on, even after they've gotten together. Dempsey and Pompeo prove that getting two characters together doesn't have to be boring; instead, it can be just the beginning of something wonderful.
