"True Blood" has become famous for nothing if not a sheer preponderance of fascinating and larger-than-life characters. Although men like Eric and Bill, and women like Sookie are indeed some of the most compelling characters, some secondary characters, such as Pam, also deserve a closer examination and understanding.
From the very beginning, Pam has shown that she is a character that no one should take lightly. Utterly devoted to her maker Eric, she is also willing to do whatever she has to do to ensure that he remains safe. So far, this has included a number of strikingly dangerous actions, such as getting herself involved with a witch (and getting cursed into the bargain), and matching wits and bodies with Sookie again and again.
However, for all that she seems to have a very hard and unbending personality, her loyalty also has its soft side, as fans can see when she is clearly distraught at the fact that Eric's memory has been taken away from him, and she is even more so when he sharply reprimands and condemns her for her desire (and attempts) to harm Sookie. It is in those scenes, when she is so clearly heartbroken that Eric has thrown over their centuries-long bond to devote himself to a rather empty-headed mortal, that she truly reveals just how sensitive and powerfully emotional that she truly is.
However, we also cannot forget that she has, recently, been stricken by a very unpleasant curse that has caused her flesh to start to rot. As of right now, it is still very unclear whether the curse has been lifted now that Marnie (and the spirit that inhabited her) is gone, but her recent appearances have been rather doctored-up with makeup (which is fortunate, since her cursed appearance, to put it mildly, has been quite horrific recently). Hopefully she will continue to get better, so that we will get to appreciate and enjoy her biting, sarcastic presence for as long as the show runs.
Clearly, Pam has been one of the unsung heroes of "True Blood." Unlike some of the other characters, who have become a little stale with time (such as the unfortunate and always-victimized Tara), Pam has continued to become more complex and fascinating as the series progresses. Will she get back together with Eric? Will she bend her formidable will to destroying Sookie forever? These are just some of the questions that we hope will be answered in the new season.
