As the old adage goes, "Like father, like son." Year after year, TV fans meet characters who have decided to follow in the footsteps of their fathers. More often than not, that means a new generation of crime fighters are following in the footsteps of their police parents. Here are some great examples of TV families with at least two generations of crime fighters to their name.
Deb and Dexter Morgan, "Dexter"
Deb is Harry Morgan's biological daughter. Dexter was adopted by Harry's family, though there is a chance he might also be Dex's biological dad: Harry was having an affair with Dexter's mom. Deb follows more closely in Harry's footsteps, with both working as police officers. Dexter works on the force in forensics, but he follows in Harry's footsteps in another way: by getting scumbags off the streets. Granted, Dexter is a serial killer, and that does make him pretty much the opposite of Harry in every way. With Season 7 premiering soon, the family dynamics between Deb and Dex are going to be tested more than they ever have in the past.
Light Yagami, "Death Note"
Like Dexter, Light has a very different approach to crime-fighting than his father does. Light is the serial killer known as "Kira," who kills only violent criminals (and those who would get in the way of his work.) Light's father is Soichiro Yagami, an honest cop who is eventually tapped to head up the team that's hunting Kira, not realizing that his own son is the serial killer he is hunting.
Veronica Mars, "Veronica Mars"
Veronica's dad was a sheriff who later became a private investigator, which probably explains why Veronica herself became a PI. Of course, her dad had a proper office, while Veronica's office was just the girl's bathroom at her school.
Shawn Spencer, "Psych"
Shawn honed his amazing observational skills under the tutelage of his father, Henry. A former cop, Henry hoped that Shawn would follow in his footsteps. While Shawn never became a cop, he does work for the police as a psychic investigator and has solved an impressive list of crimes over the years.
Jordan Cavanaugh, "Crossing Jordan"
Jordan's dad was a cop, but she decided to take a different career path. After going to medical school, Jordan became a medical examiner. But even though she wasn't technically on the police force, she still solved crimes and put away bad guys.
