TV Fact or Fiction: A 'Law & Order: SVU' Hostage Crisis

For the sake of entertainment, television shows -- even the reality ones -- often take artistic liberties in telling their stories. Sometimes the plot lines exaggerate reality and other times they mimic it, so viewers are left wondering, "Was that true? Could that happen in real life?" Now's your chance to play TV detective and uncover the truth once and for all!

TV Fact or Fiction returns with a question from this week's episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," titled "Father's Shadow." When the 19-year-old son of a reality-TV producer takes hostages, Detective Benson (Mariska Hargitay) has no choice but to enter a hostage negotiation situation by offering herself up as a hostage to rescue a wounded woman.

What do you think? Is it a real tactic for officers to exchange themselves for a hostage?

    Watch the hostage scene here:

Use the slider below to let us know what you think, and check back tomorrow when "Law & Order: SVU" technical consultant Timothy J. Hardiman reveals the truth from the set of the show!

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" airs Wednesdays at 10 PM on NBC.

After the NYPD followed an unarmed 18 year old into his home and shot and killed him in his bathroom, it was really hard to watch the police coddle a hostage taker holding a gun to a little girl on the grounds that he was just a confused and scared kid. I like the Law&Order franchise and I know that the police have a hard job but there must a place where reason, common sense and compassion meet in the real world.

That would require bravery, which most pigs lack.

That's rude to call cops that. They do a lot of to protect citizens from dangers and get the criminals off the street

@Writer117 They also like to ruin people's lives and just be plain evil. I don't see what your non-point was. .

@Eanna Grant- My Point is that not all cops are like that. That's being way too judgemental. There are a lot of cops that care about those that they are protecting.
