While no official announcements have been made, many fans and TV insiders are expecting that Season 8 will be the show's final season. If Season 8 is the show's final outing, it will have six fewer episodes than a normal season of the show. The addition for two more episodes brings the total episode order for Season 8 to 10, while most other seasons of "Psych" have boasted 16 episodes.
As Michael Ausiello of TVline.com reports, "The move comes two months after USA commissioned five additional Season 8 scripts, only two of which will now be produced."
Nellie Andreeva of Deadline clarified the current "Psych" situation thusly: "USA originally ordered eight episodes for Season 8 in December, ahead of the show's delayed seventh season, which did very well. Female lead Maggie Lawson's ABC pilot 'Back In The Game' was picked up to series, so she will only be available to do up to five episodes of 'Psych' in Season 8."
While Season 8 is likely the show's final season, fans may get surprised with a ninth season... or even a made-for-TV movie to tie things up. A lot of the show's future seems to be tied up with Maggie Lawson. However, if "Back in the Game" is a flop, the new show's cancellation could open Lawson's schedule back up. Season 8 won't even start airing until 2014, after all.
If Maggie Lawson's new show fizzles on impact, there would be plenty of time to film new episodes of "Psych." There's even a remote possibility that additional episodes could be added to the Season 8 episode order, bringing the "final" season closer in length to the other seasons.
The network's reluctance to call Season 8 the "final season" of "Psych" leaves the door open for more adventures in Santa Barbara. No "Psych" fans wants to see Maggie Lawson's new sitcom fail on ABC, but ABC's loss could certainly be USA's gain. With Lawson back in the mix, "Psych" could have a longer Season 8 than previously expected. If crime shows like "Law & Order" can run for 20 seasons, who's to say that "Psych" can't keep audiences entertained for at least 10?
