There's a new pair of rivals in town, and no, it's not "Twilight" heartthrobs Edward and Jacob. The Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon, from "The Vampire Diaries" each have their own desirable character traits. It's hard to choose between them. Stefan is portrayed as the good brother and loving boyfriend with a mysterious past. Damon is the sexy bad boy who is driven by revenge. He had a plan when coming to Mystic Falls - find his true love Katherine and get revenge on his brother who betrayed him. One of the most enticing concepts of the series is both of the brothers' intense love for Elena, the Katherine look-a-like or "doppelganger".
Brief History
Stefan and Damon Salvatore were turned into vampires in 1864 by Katherine Pierce (born Katerina Petrova). Both brothers were in a love triangle. Katherine had compelled Stefan to drink her blood and Damon, infatuated with her, did it willingly. After the town found out that Katherine was a vampire, they tried to lock her into a tomb to be destroyed. Stefan and Damon tried to save Katherine. It was later revealed that she had faked her death and created most of the tomb vampires. She sent her friends and family to their death in order to save her own life.

Pros: Let's face it, Stefan is a sweet and caring guy. He genuinely loves Elena and has proven over and over again that he would do anything to keep her safe. He is also a better fit for a human as he doesn't drink human blood. He's a guy you can trust.
Cons: Stefan remains mysterious, and not entirely truthful to Elena. He's tortured from his human-vampire past and his previous relations with the Elena look-a-like, Katherine. Many viewers also find him to be boring compared to his brother and the "safer" choice for Elena.
Damon Salvatore Profile:

Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Black
Gender: Male
Species: Vampire
Pros: Damon is the sexy, dangerous, and highly desirable bad boy. He maintains the confidence that most women find irresistible. Did we mention how sexy he is? He also has an intense connection with Elena, even if she doesn't want to admit it yet.
Cons: Damon is vengeful. He drinks human blood and takes the lives of humans for pure enjoyment. He can not be fully trusted and lacks the compassion that his brother holds true.
Both of the Salvatore brothers are a great choice for the reasons mentioned above. They have both had their heart broken by the passionless Katherine and their previous affairs stay with them through each episode. "The Vampire Diaries" will continue to present us with deeper character descriptions. As we watch, we will learn more about the attributes and flaws that each of these men (or vampires) have.
