Fans of "Breaking Bad" are getting impatient. The final episodes of the series won't air until this summer, and we can't wait to see if (and how) Walt will be punished for his actions.
The finale hasn't been shot yet, meaning that exactly how Walter White's final on-screen moments will play out hasn't been actualized. However, a recent interview with creator Vince Gilligan revealed some intriguing hints. Here are some of the clues Gilligan has dropped and what they might mean for fans of the show.
1. The finale will "bookend" with the beginning
According to Gilligan, there's a good chance that the finale will hearken back to the show's very first episode.
"Are there echoes of the beginning [the pilot episode] that we should have in the end? There's a certain kind of circularity that might be pleasing," he stated.
What might that mean? Perhaps Walt will have hair again! He might drive an unconscious Jesse around in a Winnebago or be seen wandering in the desert wearing only his underwear. Maybe Walt will record message to his family, repeating his message to them from the pilot: "I just want you to know that no matter how it may look, I only had you in my heart."
2. The finale will pay tribute to "The Godfather"
Throughout the series, the creative team has included a number of shout-outs to "The Godfather," and Gilligan hasn't ruled out a "more overt tip of the hat" to the classic film in the "Breaking Bad" finale.
Walter White has been repeatedly compared to Michael Corleone over the years. While it seems unlikely that Walter White will put a horse's head in someone's bed, it's possible that "Breaking Bad" might pay homage to "The Godfather" by having Walter Jr. get involved in his father's business. Either that, or someone is getting killed at a toll booth.
3. Walter might not be punished for his wrongdoing
Gilligan believes that bad people should be punished for their crimes. However, he told reporters, "I know it doesn't work like that in real life."
But later in the interview, he added, "I don't feel any real pressure to pay off the characters, morally speaking." That means that Walt might not see jail time for his crimes. But that doesn't mean he won't be punished in another way, such as becoming permanently estranged from his family.
