On the episode entitled "Nebraska" of "The Walking Dead," a hint may have been left for the future of Carl, Rick and Lori's son. While this brief look into the mind of the boy might have been missed by some, I noticed it since I have been a fan of the comic book series. This could easily be the seed of a plot twist which could make Carl into a soulless killer like he becomes in the comic book series.
While discussing how Rick shot the walker version of Sophia, Carl tells his mother he would have done the same thing without thinking. Later, Lori confronts Rick about how the world might make the boy into a child who will become numb to death. This could be a direct link to a storyline which has happened in the comics.
In the comics, Carl does become numb to the concept of death. In the comics, the boy not only kills walkers without thinking about it, he also kills Shane and little Ben. Granted, Carl later admits his guilt over killing Ben to Rick, he killed cold at the time. The concept of what could become to children became a strong subplot of the comic book throughout many issues.
The thought of a point-sized killer is something which would have been considered as taboo for many networks. While this is not completely foreign to TV, it is something which has been rarely touched upon outside of shows like "The Twilight Zone." If the concept could be explored by "The Walking Dead," it would be something else which would separate the show from all others on TV right now. It would get people talking and bring even more attention to the show.
I am sure there would be parent groups which would demean the concept of Carl becoming a cold killer, but they would be ignoring the reasoning of the concept and only looking at the concept itself. With the amount of killing we see on TV, in movies and in video games, there are probably children who are bringing the actions of the media into real life. If their world were based on violence and survival was fought for through death, how could it impact a child differently? I hope the creators of "The Walking Dead" are able to bring this storyline from the print of the comics to the small screen.
