Fans of "The Walking Dead" are sure to be buzzing about how Rick Grimes snapped after finding out about his wife Lori's death during childbirth. Apparently, Rick was able to clear almost an entire cell block in the jail by himself armed only with an axe. There are reasons why the creators of the show needed Rick to snap at this point.
Breaking point
The comic book version of "The Walking Dead" shows Rick reaching and/or surpassing his breaking point on a handful of occasions. One of the goals is to keep Rick as human as possible as readers (and viewers of the show) know there is only so much a person can take before going completely crazy. With having to take responsibility for the other survivors, the main character of the story can sometimes appear superhuman. By reaching a breaking point, fans can be reminded of how human he actually is.Rebuilding from the ground floor
The group is now going to have to deal with a baby in their midst and will soon have to deal with The Governor and the survivors in Woodbury. Since Rick snapped, he is going to have a journey to rebuild himself emotionally. The group is going to need Rick to be as close to 100 percent to deal with the upcoming struggles, and he can be more effective for the group if he can overcome his own personal mental struggles. If he can beat his own inner demons, he can face anything the creators throw at him.How dark can Rick be?
Fans of the comic version of "The Walking Dead" already know how dark the character of The Governor can be. Viewers who have never read the printed pages are starting to understand that The Governor is a dangerous man and has surrounded himself with other dangerous individuals. Each time he is on screen, fans become more concerned about the wellbeing of the characters they tune in each week to see.By having Rick snap, the writers on the show have been able to show a counterbalance to The Governor. Granted, the character played by David Morrissey still has a long ways to go to show that he is as evil as his comic book counterpart, but Rick is already showing he can overwhelm both versions of The Governor when he is pushed too far. If Rick can handle countless walkers in the dark with only an ax, he can handle anything dished out by the survivors of Woodbury and their leader.
