The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln on Rick vs. Shane: "Not Everybody Gets Out Alive"

"I'm not the good guy anymore."

Those words are spoken by The Walking Dead's Rick Grimes during one of several intense conversations on Sunday's episode (9/8c, AMC) of the zombie drama. According to series star Andrew Lincoln, he's been waiting a long time to hear his character say just that.

The Walking Dead boss: Lori has become Lady Macbeth

Lincoln tells TVGuide.com his favorite part of the graphic novel series that inspired the show was watching Rick devolve from the upstanding sheriff's deputy to a man willing to do almost anything to survive during lawless, zombie-infested times. That transformation is about to happen on-screen.

"The thing I loved about the second half of the season is that you're moving in a direction that I think the comic book reached a bit sooner than we did in the TV show," he says. "With the death of Sophia, something dies in Rick. He has to reevaluate how he's been viewing the world and how to live in this world. I think he's moving much more toward Shane's sensibility."

Shane (Jon Bernthal) has become a bit of an outcast among the survivors because of his increasingly hot-tempered, erratic behavior (everyone remembers the zombie massacre in Hershel's barn, yes?), not to mention his continued questioning of Rick's leadership. Those issues will come to a head in Sunday's when Shane and Rick venture out alone to dispose of Randall (guest star Michael Zegen), the straggler Rick rescued after the shootout at the bar.

Exclusive: See how The Walking Dead's most gruesome scenes come to life

Rick's decision to confront Shane comes after Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) did her best Lady Macbeth in suggesting to Rick that the group is no longer safe with Shane in their midst. "When [Lori] says, 'I don't feel safe; I'm scared' — that's enough," Lincoln says. "But then she also says, '[Shane] says that you're not up to the job.' That's enough to push anybody over the edge, even someone as rational and as considered and as smart as Rick. He can't avoid the issue much longer."

The former best friends and partners exchange more than just words with each another. Will they ever see eye-to-eye again? Lincoln says the duo's history, including Shane's efforts to keep Rick's son Carl (Chandler Riggs) alive after he suffered a gunshot wound, complicates matters.

"I've always thought that they were like Cain and Abel. They're brothers but they see the world differently," Lincoln says. "And Shane saved [Carl]. That's at the heart of Rick's dilemma. Sure, there are people who are going, 'Shane's an animal.' But ultimately these people have to stay together to survive."

But for how long? Many intuitive TV viewers have already deduced that Bernthal's casting in a new TNT pilot written by former Walking Dead executive producer Frank Darabont could be a signal that Shane is not long for this world.

"Not everybody gets out alive," Lincoln teases. "We're not shy of blood, sweat and tears in the last four episodes."

Does that mean Rick will kill Shane and prove once and for all that he is the right man to lead the survivors? "The whole season begins with Rick talking about this group of people in monologue. 'Am I doing the right thing? Can I be this man for these people?'" Lincoln says. "And he ends up with an answer. But the answer is not necessarily what you may think it is.

"He loses a lot physically and psychologically and mentally during the next four episodes," he continues. "He turns into somebody that possibly he never thought he would become. He goes to a place — he's pushed to a place — that he hasn't been pushed for a long time. And he's asked to do things he probably doesn't wish to do."

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC. Check out our video interview with Lincoln below:

So why don't they eat each other's brains? Are their hearts beating? What chemical reaction makes them go?

I've loved this show from day one! It looks like from next weeks preview, that Shane is still plotting against Rick. Even after Rick rescued him from the school bus. I say it's time for Shane to be taken out!

The graphic novels moved at light speed compared to the TV series. We'd started to refer to the show as "Zombies in the Barn" becuase it was taking soooo long to get through that part.
It will be nice to see somebody deal with Shane one an for all. I'm really glad that they are setting up Jon Bernthal up with a new gig - he's a great actor along with the rest of the cast.
By the way, did anybody think that it was funny that they kept playing, "Where's Herschel?" this week? The others seemed to have a holiday this episode and they weren't asking where's, "Darryl and Glen?"

Also, the only reason Dale has such a problem with Shane is because Shane put the nuts to Andrea.

Dale caught Shane attempting to gun down Rick in the forest...that started his distrust of Shane.

Shane is a dangerous guy, Rick needs to raise his danger level up a bit to de-throne him. I also liked what the old man told him "Do whats best for both of us and shut up!".
This show rocks, so does Breaking Bad. AMC rocks nowadays!

Shane is needed in this group. He realizes what has to be done and he has the balls to take care of it. The people in the barn for example. One, or all of them would have gotten free and then what? GO SHANE......

Am I the only one that likes the character Shane? He was right about that barn. Crazy old Hershel was keeping those creatures as pets putting even his own daughters in danger. Shane was also right to lie to Lori that Rick was back at the farm. The #$%$ is pregnant and she decides to leave safety to go chase Rick. What's wrong with her?

This show rocks, hope they dont kill off Shane.
    • Gary Cleek  •  Franklin Lakes, New Jersey  •  2 months ago
I really think that the show is moving in the direction of what happened in the comics. Shane kept opposing Rick like he does in the show, and one day snaps. He decides to take Rick out, but before he can Carl comes out of no where and shoots Shane in the head. Paraphrasing, "It's not like killing the walkers"!
"It never should be. It never should be".
And when are they going to introduce the samurai sword wielding heroine?

prepare for the zombie apocalypse by watching this series, yes it is possible
    • A Yahoo! User  •  3 months ago
Shane is a cold blooded murderer, who murdered a decent man who was trying to help them in order to save his own skin. But today, most Americans worship murder, so its not unusual so many people like him. The shows great, but too bad so many people root for the bad guy, rather than the good man Rick, who has to make the truly hard decisions and do the truly hard things it takes to survive while still being a good man.
