The Winchester boys take on psychics and mediums in the "Supernatural" episode "The Mentalists." (It was once called "Medium Rare" and really should have stayed that way.) As promised, we are getting the "monster of the week" type episodes, where each episode features a monster for the boys to kill, whether new or old, while the main plot pops up here and there. While many would call these filler episodes, even fillers are fun on "Supernatural."
The Winchester boys visit a town considered to be the most psychic place in America, Lily Dale, N.Y. A ghost murders psychics and mediums in the town, and the boys must figure out which medium is controlling the ghost. When everyone claims to have spiritual powers, how do they determine who is the bad guy?
The episode is sure to poke fun at the psychic and spiritual life. There will be many stereotypical jokes about them and probably a couple about Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg. It is easy to imagine "Supernatural" fans rushing off to western New York for a look at the place, since Lily Dale is very real.
The Lily Dale Assembly: Lily Dale is near Buffalo. The Lily Dale Assembly runs it, and if you want to live in the town, you must have their permission. Visitors are welcome, for a fee and can enjoy demonstrations, healing services, fairy trails, Inspiration Stump, Marion Skidmore Library ,and a walk through the pet cemetery. Lily Dale has been the center of spiritual knowledge since 1879, and has over 40 registered mediums living in the town. That is quite a good number of mediums to kill off in "Supernatural," but which one is committing the murders? Knowing "Supernatural," it probably isn't a medium at all.
Lily Dale is located near the lake and town of Cassadaga, which just happens to be the name of another spiritualist town that "Supernatural" writers might have used with Lily Dale when writing the episode.
Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, Fla.: Cassadaga is slightly younger than Lily Dale but has just as many mediums. A New Yorker, most likely from Lily Dale, who was told during a seance that he would form a community in Florida, founded the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp. The camp offers healings, classes and church services. There is a museum and a bookstore.
Together, Lily Dale and Cassadaga will become famous on "Supernatural."
