What a particularly wonderful tribute to Chance as he is leaving for a combat zone. A farewell barbeque brings in quite a few of his family and friends, attempting to bring closure to some bad calls and feel more comfortable knowing that they have tried to put things right, in case he does not return home. Could it be that Genoa City is going to fill with love, forgiveness, respect and honor? It is not going to happen. Nina reminded Heather she was unwelcome, even though Chance was leaving and Paul invited her. Nina apologized to Chance for being so difficult, but there is no reason to think she really has changed.Chance changed into his Army uniform and Kay told him goodbye. The whole gang watched Murphy hoist the flag. At that instant Chance showed his ignorance of what a soldier should know and displayed a blatant disregard by the writers, other cast members and the network. Even though Chance is returning overseas as a career soldier, he failed to remove his cover, stand at attention or salute the raising flag. A rare opportunity to remind viewers of flag protocol, wasted.
With contracts ending on so many shows, fans are beginning to get suspicious of any unusual or quirky behavior. Chance returned from the grave several months ago. His lack of military demeanor possibly indicates a recklessness that might get him killed. Sharon had an opportunity to make herself known but let it slide. Heather is leaving for New York. Nikki continues to battle her war with alcohol and she shows no sign of acknowledging that she has to swear off the booze that has taken control of her life again.
Nikki is the focal point of "Y & R." If the show were indeed winding down, a quick, painless death from alcohol poisoning would be merciful. If the network is going to take advantage of the migrating soap fans, an incredible opportunity awaits.
Victor fell in love with Nikki years ago and saved her from an unsavory life and alcoholism. His life is upside down right now as his brief marriage to Diane is over, his empire ripped apart and his children surviving without him. Redeeming Nikki once again will give Victor Newman the chance to do what he does best. Rebuilding her self-confidence and feeling of worth will remind him of his own value, something forgotten lately.
