    Dover revealed in wonderful detail

    November 20, 2007
I am a long-term NOVA lover. This production was perhaps the best I have ever seen. I was following the Dover travesty as it unfolded. I exhaled when I heard the report of the judge's verdict. A close call. This was the first detailed explanation of evidence presented by both sides that I've seen. The court room reenactments were gems of clarity. The comments made at the end by the thwarted ex-policeman - nasty personal attacks on the judge - seem to me such perfect exemplars of the "arguments" put forward by the creationists - let's not waste time on the intelligent design euphemistic smoke screen. They have their faith. More power to them. Although it will not happen, I still wish sometimes that they would admit the possibility that others view their faith as a choice, and that those others may have thought through the idea of making that same choice, and in the end decided that a religion that requires dispensing with reason might, just might, not be a good choice.
The argument from design is probably the most convincing for a Creator. But it's still all circumstantial. It has no real explaining power.
It's just that evolution does provide a rich explaining framework that does not need the presence of a supernatural being. The statements made by some, such as evolution implying that a complete 747 should emerge from a junk pile, is completely offbase about evolution actually claims. Certainly not that.
But again, faith is a choice. And that is the key point. That choice precludes even the consideration of alternatives. The mind is closed, in one sense. I think that I get and can admire that those of faith, and I have some among my dearest family, feel rather that their faith opens their hearts to a all-encompassing love. It's just that it comes at a price that I regard as too high to pay.

Dr. Percy Julian - No Longer forgotten

    February 6, 2007
Kudos to NOVA & PBS. This was a great start to Black History Month. As a native of Chicago and a resident of Oak Park, I knew about some of Dr. Julian's accomplishments and how he was treated when his family moved from Maywood to Oak Park. This was a wonderful opportunity to know more about this man. I found the program was informative about his life, schools attended, the company he worked for. I had no idea that he had the opportunity to study in Europe. It was a loving tribute and a great history lesson all around.

Super explanation of the Dover case

    December 4, 2007
Simply an excellent example of logic and reasoning. The only thing "scary" about this case is that it actually happened in a modern society. Organized religion has consistantly denied obvious scientific findings for thousands of years whenever it contradicted religious doctrine. Copernicus...Gallileo...Darwin... The fact that people are still denying widely accepted scienctific evidence is an embarrassment to our country. The sooner we realize the foolishness of religion, the faster we will move forward as a people and a nation.

    Good episode but sad topic

    November 13, 2007
The fact that there is a "debate" about evolution in this country is an embarassment. The fact that religious points of view on this issue are infiltrating science classes is frightening. Are there really people out there who believe in Adam and Eve literally (our President for example) ?
Scientific study of our universe is based on impartial conclusions
based on observable and measurable data. The metaphysical and "spiritual" are based on ancient belief and "faith" which vary from culture to culture. PLEASE, let's not mix the two.

...when I laid the foundation of the earthJob38:4

    November 14, 2007
This was another excellent NOVA episode. It's disturbing to see the emotions it clearly evoked for so many override reasonable judgements, which can happen to those on both sides of the issue. I believe all Christians will agree that God writes with two great books, the Bible and the book of nature. Both should evoke reverence and wonder rather than a neatly packaged God in a box reminiscent of Job's miserable comforters. Maybe the Christian response to the creation should be more like Job's overwhelming encounter with God than the views I hear from many creationists. Neither does science ever provide the full story of the world. Rather science tells us a lot about that little bit of reality we've been able to uncover up to this point. Einstein once said One thing I have learned in a long life: That all our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike . Science and religion should both evoke wonder and awe.
