CBC fall schedule heralds arrival of two big American game shows

Mon May 26, 10:22 AM PDT

TORONTO - The CBC is heralding the arrival of two big American game shows and the return of shows like "Sophie" and "Little Mosque on the Prairie" in a fall programming schedule featuring old favourites but lacking much new, Canadian-made fare.

Kirstine Layfield, executive director of network programming for the CBC, says the public broadcaster is bringing viewers a schedule packed with favourites, including the second season of "The Tudors," the steamy drama about the life of Henry VIII. Acting legend Peter O'Toole joins the cast of the show this year as Pope Paul III.

The hit sitcom "Little Mosque on the Prairie" returns for a third season while "The Border" is back for its sophomore kick at the can.

The Alberta-based family drama "Heartland" is also back, as is "Sophie," "Steven and Chris" and "The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos." "Dragon's Den" also returns with 10 new one-hour episodes.

And for the first time, the wildly successful U.S. game show "Jeopardy," hosted by Canadian Alex Trebek, comes to the CBC. "Wheel of Fortune," another American game show juggernaut, will also appear on the public broadcaster for its 26th season.

The network has its own, made-in-Canada quiz show airing this fall: "Test the Nation: Canada, Eh?" brings six teams together including weathercasters, former contestants on "Reach For The Top," new Canadians, members of the Canadian Forces, tour guides and American-Canadians.

Also on the schedule is a new miniseries, "Celine," chronicling the rise to fame of one of the world's biggest pop stars, Celine Dion. Another miniseries, "Everest," tells the story of the first Canadians to climb Mount Everest and stars Jason Priestley and William Shatner.

The CBC has exclusive broadcasting rights for the Beijing Summer Games, set for August.
