After receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale University School of Drama, Michael Gross started his career in the theater. In the 1980s, he landed roles in the TV movies "F.D.R.: The Last Year" and "Dream House." But it was the role of the kindhearted dad, Steven Keaton, on "Family Ties" that made him a household name.
After "Family Ties" ended, Gross returned to made-for-television movies, appearing in "Firestorm: 72 Hours in Oakland" and "Avalanche." He also made guest appearances on the series "Dream On" and "Ally McBeal." His biggest post-"Ties" success came in the cult favorite horror franchise "Tremors," in which he played Burt Gummer. In the last couple of years, he reunited with his "Family Ties" wife, Meredith Baxter, when they did voice-over together on the animated series "Dan Vs."
Gross has been married to Elz Bergeron since 1984 and is stepfather to her children, Katharine and Theodore Burkhardt. (His sister, Mary Gross, was a cast member on "Saturday Night Live" from 1981 to 1985.) He is an avid train enthusiast who collects railroad antiques in his spare time.
