Bryan Collins and David Murray are TV's newest gay couple to be caught up in a media firestorm. Long before it premiered, "The New Normal" was coming under attack by some conservatives. They were opposed to the show, which depicts a gay couple who recruit a surrogate to deliver a baby for them. One Mormon church-owned Utah affiliate went so far as to decide not to air the series, but it was soon picked up by another local carrier.
At its heart, the edgy sitcom -- from "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy and his partner Allison Adler -- poses the question "What is a normal family?" In a climate where same-sex marriage equality is a major political topic, now seems like a good time to pose the query outright. As people search for an answer, perhaps they'll start to embrace the concept of gay matrimony and same-sex-parent households. As the show's outspoken co-star
Ellen Barkin noted, "Hopefully we will learn that it's just not scary. There's nothing to be afraid of."
Andrew Rannells told NPR that he
first realized he was gay when he was 4 years old and came out when he was 18.
Justin Bartha is straight and ended a two-year relationship with Ashley Olsen in 2011.
