    Friday Night Lights

    March 26, 2007
Well written material comes alive with the actors' performances. The cast is multigenerational and racially diverse, much like our schools and communities are today. This show is brave enough to hit on current problems students and players face, whether is't an affair with the boyfriend's best friend, peer pressure for early sex, and temptations of steroid abuse, life crisis from severe spinal injury. It also places the camera in front of the parent figures, showing their faults and failures, their love and stedfast goal of having their child be sucessful, even as they compromise the goals as their young adult children find there own way. Over and over the theme of right vs wrong/good over evil gets played out with different actors who listen to parents and/or friends, and then must weigh the choice and move on with the consequences. When those decisions go bad, it's never brushed under the rug, but rather is a means to talk through again, and find a better way.

It's been quite some time since we've had such an excellent show about family, without the laugh track or fake applause. I so hope NBC renews this show. It can appeal to almost any demographic as its strokes are put to large canvess, showing great range in the human spirit and the things that are best about family, the ones we are born into as well as the family we join like the football team.
