Right Here, Right Now

Previously. Oh, wait, this show doesn't do previouslies anymore. If you haven't watched before, you're going to be pretty lost. Unless you just finished watching Grey's and stuck around here for Bailey. In which case, welcome. The weecaps should catch you up, if you care what's going on with Naomi and Addison, why Violet's baby lives with Pete even though his paternity is questionable, and who on earth that squeaky-voiced woman berating Addison is.
Bailey shows up in sunny L.A., and immediately tells everyone helping her get her patient out of the ambulance that it's not a beach party. Well, actually, Miranda... this is L.A. Even the depression, gloom and heartache are all beaches and sun here. They can't help it. Addison greets Bailey at the ER entrance, and tells her there's a transplant team standing by to give Sarah her sister's kidney. Bailey says that, without the kidney, Sarah will go into full renal failure in 72 hours. Then they finally greet, all "Hi," and Bailey fills Addison in on everything that's happened on Grey's (wouldn't it have made more sense if Addison had filled Bailey in so that we'd get our "this is what's going on" since they keep skipping previouslies? I know Addison would legitimately want to know, but it seems like a waste of time to tell Private Practice viewers what's happening on Grey's ; either they watch it and know, or they don't care): " Seattle Grace is merging with Mercy West , which means half the doctors in the city are out of a job. I'm getting a divorce , which means I'm a single mom. Stevens has cancer . Meredith and Derek got married on a Post-It note ! And George O'Malley is dead , but you know that already. I don't sleep much anymore, because I lie awake at night and wonder where all the joy is. During the day I realize the joy packed its bags and left. The glasses of the world are half-empty." Addison: "But... you're an attending." Bailey agrees with that, and asks how Addison is.
Before she can answer, though, Charlotte walks up, and Addison introduces them. Bailey thanks Charlotte for the professional courtesy and insults Charlotte's small hospital. Charlotte says they're small but efficient, so maybe the job will get done right this time. Bailey quickly exposits so we all know why she's here (other than to boost ratings): The donor is a single mom with three small kids and an abusive ex-husband, so she can't just leave the state. Whereas it was so easy to fly down here with a nearly dead patient on a stretcher. She says Seattle Grace would have been better, what with its cutting-edge teaching-hospital-ness, and Charlotte says they don't need to be a teaching hospital here, because everyone already knows what they're doing. She leaves, and Addison apologizes for her. Bailey doesn't care though: "Don't have to like her. Just need her OR."
Sam's the next one to join the group. He sweetly and pretty excitedly says, "Dr. Bailey. Well, well, well. Look at you," to which Bailey replies in typical Bailey fashion: "Why we lookin' at me?" Sam's face falls, as he stammers that he didn't mean anything. Then he says "hello," and Bailey's like, "What are we waiting for?! Where's my kidney?" She leaves, apparently looking for it, and Addison cutely says, "Bailey's here." Sunny title card.
Addison and Sam are briefing Donor Sister on everything. She says she was tested as a partial match three years ago, so they shouldn't have to go through all the protocols, but since they're doctors, they're going to do the tests and have the surgery tomorrow. Bailey says tomorrow is actually better since Sarah just got off of an air ambulance and her body needs to rest anyway. Bailey wants to do this right or not do it at all. Donor Sister says she knows, and she's sorry, but this is her sister. Bailey promises to fix this.
Violet's back at work, and Sheldon's apparently stalking her, because he's there to greet her and welcome her back. She says hi, and he asks how she's doing, not therapeutically, but just in general. Then he asks how Lucas is, and Violet says she gave him to Pete. He's confused but once he figures it out, he freaks out that Lucas could be his baby and she can't just give him away. Which is very true, actually, but Violet gets up and forces him out of her office. Then Sheldon's in Pete's office, bugging him. He's angry that Pete has Lucas, and wonders what's going on with Violet. Pete says she's working on things, and not to worry about Lucas, who's fine. I'm thinking Sheldon's going to go ahead and worry anyway.
Sam's running tests on Donor Sister and telling her to just wait so Bailey can do her job. Donor Sister asks Sam if Bailey's any good, considering what happened in Seattle (which was Izzie's fault, of course, but Donor Sister wouldn't know that). Bailey's outside the room and hears Sam tell Donor Sister that "Dr. Bailey is one of the best." Awww. Donor Sister says she seems cold, and Sam says she's a surgeon, so needs to be quick and decisive, and she is. Donor Sister says she's a single mom, and Sarah saved them after the abusive father situation. She says her kids don't have a dad or grandparents. They have their mom and they have Sarah, and they need both of them. He understands that's why she's giving up an organ, duh, and leaves. Bailey says he's good with the patient and they discuss her a bit, and then Bailey snarks, "How are those anxiety attacks ?" Sam: " Asthma ." Bailey: "Right." Then she leaves, and Sam hollers, "It was asthma!" after her as she leaves.
Cooper's storyline begins with a Patient of the Week. He shows up at a house, where a mom greets him and they talk about her son, who's basically a boy in the bubble . He's 16, and not happy he's in this suburban jail. Coop talks to the kid, who just wants to kiss his girlfriend and go to homecoming -- is that so much to ask? He also seems to want to masturbate, because he asks Cooper if he knows how many things you can't do while your mother's watching. Maybe she could leave the room and give him a little privacy. She does know he's a 16-year-old boy, right? Bubble Boy says all he gets to do is talk and talk and talk with his girlfriend, and Coop wishes Charlotte could take some lessons, since she never talks. Bubble Boy's girlfriend pops up on his computer screen and calls him "Bubble Boy," so I feel less bad about that.
Oceanside lobby. Naomi's there when Addison and Bailey walk in, and Bailey immediately calls Naomi out on being there, since she thought she'd gone to a new practice. Addison explains what Naomi's doing now (running a different practice downstairs, but mostly hanging out at Oceanside trying to be friends with Addison). Naomi says she's tried to call Addison, and Addison just says she's been busy. Nae says she just came up to welcome Violet back, and leaves. Bailey's like, "I thought you were best friends," and Addison accidentally says, "We were," before correcting, "We are, we are." But then Cooper walks by, so Addison distracts herself by introducing him to Bailey. Coop's all, "Oh, hey, wow, uh, shorter." He touches Bailey on top of her head, and doesn't stop: "I mean. I thought. What Sam says and Addison. About. Uh, it's a compliment. I have twins waiting." He leaves, and Bailey hopes he's better with twins than adults. Then Violet comes out and Addison introduces them. Violet acts crazy, and walks off, then Bailey wonders if she's the one who had the thing, you know, with her baby , and Addison confirms. Bailey can't believe she's not in a padded room, let alone back at work. Pete's changing Lucas in his office because he has no patients ever, and Bailey wonders if he's the father. Addison says he's "one of them," and that it's complicated. Bailey: "This place is better than a telenovela." Addison says it's not a telenovela, but then Squeaky Morgan comes in carrying her baby that Addison saved and asks if Addison slept with her husband. She says Noah says they didn't, but she wanted to come and ask Addison. Addison promises nothing like that happened, and Squeaky says she believes her, and leaves. Yeah, I'm with Bailey on the whole "telenovela" thing.
In her office, Addison tells Bailey to go ahead and say it. Bailey pretends she doesn't care, but Addison explains that Noah's a heart surgeon and Squeaky was her patient. Bailey says she doesn't care, but Addison continues that they didn't have sex. They went to first base, or maybe second, somewhere around there. Bailey doesn't want to know about bases or anything else, but Addison says it's Miranda and Addison, and she knows her and knows she has something to say. Sam interrupts, though, and says Donor Sister cannot be a donor after all. Uh-oh. I'll have to find a new name for her, then. Sam and Bailey head in to Sarah's room, and want to speak to Donor Sister (whose name is Emily). Both women already know what they're going to say, though: Donor Sister is HIV positive. But Sarah will die in three days without the kidney, so she'd rather get AIDS than die. That's a direct quote, despite the fact that this would be HIV, not AIDS. I mean, be careful what you wish for, Sarah.
Sam and Bailey discuss what to do. It's too late to put Sarah back on dialysis, and the only hope is that a donor dies between now and the morning. Otherwise, Sarah's dead, says Bailey, unless they give her Donor Sister's kidney. Sam points out the obvious: You can't transplant an HIV-infected organ and with all of the surgery and medications, she could develop full-blown AIDS before she even leaves the hospital (what did I tell her about being careful what she wished for?). Bailey agrees that could happen, but she could also live with HIV for the rest of her life and be fine. Sam wonders about Donor Sister, since there's no data on how someone in her situation can handle this. Bailey wants to do it, and says the laws are old, from before HIV and AIDS were treatable. Oh, and also, death isn't treatable. Sam accuses Bailey of playing God, and she takes it as a compliment, since she's a surgeon. Sam says they both want to save the patient, but he won't back her on this, and is putting his foot down. She tells him to pick the foot up and use it to walk away from her.
Pete and Coop are walking along a sunny sidewalk somewhere, discussing Bubble Boy. Pete's trying to talk Coop out of letting the kid go to homecoming. He says it's only one dance, but Coop shrieks, "And then his girl's going to be there with some other guy!" He tells a story about his chemistry lab partner, who was way out of his league but got to know him and liked him. He asked her to formal and she said yes, but then his parents took him on some lame trip and she was with someone else when they came back. Pete asks if they're doing this for Bubble Boy or for Coop, and Coop says the kid could be fine if his numbers are good, so "Come on! Let's let the boy get the girl."
Violet's sulking in her office when Sheldon comes in and tells her how sorry he is for what's happened to her and that she's not working out with Pete, but she gave away a child that might be his, and he needs to know if Lucas is his son. He wants a paternity test. Violet says, "Okay, fine, whatever, do it." Sheldon's surprised, but relieved, and leaves. Pete and Coop are with Bubble Boy, who's trying to decide what to wear to the homecoming. Not that he's getting his hopes up or anything. They're running tests to get his numbers and see if he can go. Pete talks to his mom outside the bubble. She says she wants him happy, but she's scared and the idea of losing your child doesn't get easier. She asks if Pete has kids, and he says yes, so she says he understand then.
Naomi checks on Sarah, and says she's getting worse, but hopefully they'll find another donor. Donor Sister: "And when they don't?" Bailey says they'll cross that bridge when they come to it and leaves the room. Sam greets her and asks if she's okay. She says she's spent the past 12 hours thinking about death, with the possibility of Sarah dying, Donor Sister dying, or someone dying to give them a kidney. She's sick of thinking about death, so she walks off looking sad. Sheldon storms into Addison's office and says he wants a paternity test and has Violet's consent. Addison asks about Pete's, and Pete walks by right then, wondering what's going on. When Sheldon tells him, Pete's not okay with it, but Sheldon's pushy. They argue in front of Addison. Pete says he looks at Lucas and already knows, which Sheldon diagnoses as denial. Technically, not denial, right? Wouldn't he have to know Lucas wasn't his and deny it for it to be denial? It's more of wishful thinking at this point. Sheldon yells, "Do the test," and leaves. Addison hates this day. But Bailey's there! Why would she hate that?
Addison heads out onto her deck at sunset, where Bailey's sitting. Addison thinks she's being thoughtful, but then sees Sam shirtless next door and realizes that's what Bailey's checking out. Bailey says she doesn't check out scenery. Addison thinks it's great that they're both single and there were sparks. Bailey would like to know why all anybody thinks about is sex. She wonders why that's all "you doctors" do, sleep with each other. Addison says she thought about sleeping with Noah, but didn't do it. She says she tried to fire Squeaky as a patient before things went too far, if Bailey's wondering. Bailey says she isn't, but Addison says she can see it written all over her face, so she might as well say it before her head explodes. Bailey: "Husband's best friend. Patient's husband. Where I come from, that's called a bad track record." She says some poor woman's marching around the hospital with a baby wondering if Addison slept with her husband, and Addison wants a gold star for saying she did the right thing. "You're acting like a tramp? You don't get a gold star! You asked." Seriously, Bailey, THANK YOU. This all needed to be said and Addison needed to be humbled in order for me to like her again. We all needed this. Addison asks if Bailey's okay, and she says she's glass half-empty, and they're not talking about it. Addison: "Okay." That's actually a sweet scene. Addison totally accepted all of that, which makes her pretty great, actually. I love her again, I think. How did that happen so quickly?
Pete shows up at Violet's and asks her to sign a paper putting him on the birth certificate. She tells him to work this out with Sheldon, but he says she owes him this. She looks coldly at Lucas in his carrier and repeats that he needs to work this out with Sheldon. I am really growing to hate her, which is weird. You'd think the baby getting cut out of her stomach would make me sympathetic, but I actually used to like her and now I don't. In bed, Charlotte kisses Coop's hand and then gets up and gets dressed. She tells him she's going home, but he wanted her to stay and talk. She tells him how lucky he is, with the no strings and the sex, but he says she called and wanted to talk. She says it was just a moment, but then Violet got attacked and it passed, so she's doing this her way and he should just go with that. She leaves.
Oceanside lobby. Squeaky's back to talk to Addison again. She says she's embarrassed for barging in yesterday, without calling, and bringing the baby with her like that. Addison says she doesn't have to apologize, since she had every right to ask the questions, but she hopes Squeaky believes her. She does. Then Addison says, "Good. Good. Because whatever happened..." Squeaky's face immediately registers panic, as she realizes she does believe her there was no sex, but that something happened. Addison doesn't notice she's freaked Squeaky out, and continues she hopes this helps, since she doesn't want to be that person. She hopes Noah and Squeaky can put this behind them. Squeaky says she hopes so, too, and leaves.
Pete and Coop are back with Bubble Boy, and his number is 204, which is right on the border, but he can kiss the girl. Excitement ensues until Pete notices his mom's sweaty and she says could have the flu. Which means he can't leave. Pete says his system's compromised, but Coop says the numbers are there. Pete tells Bubble Boy there will be other dances. Coop and Pete are leaving in a huff, as Cooper says he asked for a consult, not for Pete to make decisions without him. Pete thinks Cooper's lost sight of what's best for Bubble Boy, and isn't thinking about his mother and what's best for her. Cooper asks what this has to do with Pete, and Pete says Sheldon wants a paternity test and Violet agreed to it. It's a stretch, even for this show, to have the Bubble Boy storyline relate to what Pete's dealing with, but whatever.
Hospital. Bailey tells Sam Sarah's organs are shutting down. He wants to increase her morphine, but Bailey won't do it. Sam wonders if she thinks Charlotte's going to let her do an illegal surgery, and she says she's dealt with tougher chiefs. Sam asks if that's it: Bailey feels guilty, so she's going to forget the law and everything else. She storms out and he tells her to "just walk away," so she stops and tells him she was guilty when she got here, but she was acting as a surgeon, which is her job, to cut through the bull. He told her they're all doctors here, but she says it's a personality thing, and she's seen him enough to know he's good, but he hangs back and watches while she acts. She says she doesn't stand outside a room and watch her life pass her by (low blow!) and she won't stand by and watch this patient die.
Bailey explains the situation to Charlotte, who makes sure Seattle Grace is on the hook if this girl dies. Bailey says this is the right thing to do, and Charlotte says she'll talk to some staff and see about getting a team together. She wonders what are they going to do: drag them all to jail for saving lives. Bailey says they might, but that Addison was wrong about Charlotte. Who does that? If someone talks shit about someone else, you don't tell that person the other person was wrong, or they'll know about the shit-talking. I don't believe Bailey's that stupid. The writers seem to be, however.
Violet's office. Cooper wonders if she's going to go ahead and let Sheldon get the paternity test. She is. Cooper says she gave Lucas to Pete and she can't just do this, but she says she can. Cooper says he can't let her just toss her child aside. He needs her to care. She says she'd give anything to care, to feel happy, sad, anything. She says she can't feel and it's like not being able to taste. It's like remembering what chocolate tastes like, but you can't taste it anymore. She wants to be a person who cares about her son, but she's rotting from the inside out. She wishes there were a pill to fix this, but all she has is her work. She asks Sheldon to leave her alone so she can work. Elsewhere, Lucas cries, and when Addison goes to check on him, Naomi's holding him. Addison leaves and Nae asks what's going on with her. Nae says she went downstairs to work because she needed to do it, and it wasn't to hurt Addison. She wants to get past this. Addison says it's not about that, so Nae wonders what. Addison says she "just can't."
She heads outside for some air, fans her face, then sits on a bench. Squeaky comes up and says all the way home she wondered why she didn't feel better. Addison invites her up to her office, but Squeaky doesn't want to go where Addison would feel more comfortable. She says she knows what Addison said, and you'd think knowing he was faithful would make her feel better, but she feels worse because he could get over sex, which is biological, carnal, forgivable. She says she can see what this did to Noah, and she sees the look in Addison's eyes. She wonders if Addison loves him, and Addison won't answer. She says, "But we didn't..." but Squeaky says that doesn't matter if he thinks about her, and that she'll be there, in his head, for the rest of their marriage. Squeaky says Addison's a liar for saying nothing happened, and she leaves. I still don't think Noah and Addison could possibly have been in love, but it is Addison, and everyone loves her on sight. Doesn't explain her reciprocation, but I guess Noah was pretty cute.
Hospital hallway. Bailey's telling a team that there are risks to assisting in this illegal operation, so if anyone wants to back out, now is the time. One guy steps forward and says he's sorry, he won't tell, but he can't do this. Bailey says they'll do it without him, but Charlotte says it's a no go without a proper team. Sam says she has a full team. He did a surgical residency; he didn't always stand by and watch. He suggests they stop wasting time and scrub in.
Pete and Coop are discussing Bubble Boy, and Coop comes to the realization that he's actually jealous of Bubble Boy's relationship with his girlfriend, which is pathetic. Pete: "That is pathetic." Coop's phone rings. It's Bubble Boy's mom, telling them that Bubble Boy and his suit are both gone. Next thing we know, Pete and Coop are awkwardly entering a dance full of teenagers. Cooper thinks high school dances are the same: "They still smell like desperation and puke." They see Bubble Boy, and tell him they have to go. He doesn't want to yet, but Pete says he's burning up and Coop agrees he knows he has to. Bubble Boy apologizes to his girlfriend, and they start to leave, when he heads back to kiss her. It's a long kiss and either it literally knocks him off his feet or he's sick because he faints on the way out of the gym.
Pete and Coop are getting Bubble Boy into a room at the hospital. Bubble Boy tells Coop groggily it was the best night of his life, as they try to get him ready for... something. In another hospital room, Bailey's getting Donor Sister ready to go under by asking her to tell them about her kids. She's out before she's finished talking about one kid. Bailey: "Let's do this." Pete's already back at Oceanside, where he's surprised to find Addison holding Lucas. They both agree it's been a bad day, and Addison says it must be nice to be a baby, with no mistakes, nothing you can't take back, and everything's still head: best friends, first love. Pete adds "first kiss." He says he just wants to take Lucas to Mexico and get away from all this. Addison says it's tough to do the right thing, and he agrees.
There's a knock on Naomi's door, and it's Violet. She says she couldn't sleep and had to get out of her house. She thinks Naomi might not get it, since she loves her kid, but she needs a friend who will let her sit and maybe drink and not talk about anything. Nae says she gets it and invites her in. What happened to drinking with Charlotte ? She doesn't make anyone talk about anything. Bailey and Sam are in surgery, when Sarah's blood pressure drops, and Sam talks surgical heart talk. Bailey thinks they need a cardiothoracic surgeon, but he says there's no time and he'll just do it. He says he's done it before, as Bailey says he's out of his mind. He talks himself through it, and saves Sarah from near death. Bailey's impressed.
Bailey and Sam are cleaning up after surgery and she asks WTF just happened. He says his residency was in cardio, and she tries to ask why he changed tracks, but he says he doesn't talk about why, which is no one's business. He tells her she's an infuriating, tiny little woman. She says, "Excuuuuse me," and Sam says he's going to kiss her. She says okay, but as their lips almost touch, she stops him, saying, "I'm sorry." As she should be, because that was the dumbest thing ever. He says she thinks she has everything figured out, but she doesn't know anything, and smirks away. They are cute. I still believe they need their own show.
Pete's pacing when Sheldon comes in and drones on with some anecdote, per usual. He says this one was a joke about a Freudian slip. Sheldon tries to make friends, but Pete's not having any of it. Violet's watching through the glass when Addison goes in, and Pete gets so excited. Sheldon leaves the room and tells Violet he really thought Lucas had his ears. Of course it's Pete's. I'm so happy. Coop's watching through glass, too. He's watching Bubble Boy's girlfriend sit next to him with a mask on, holding hands. Then he barges into Charlotte's office. She asks what he's doing, but he just grabs her purse then grabs her, dips her, and kisses her. He picks her up, and she asks if he's crazy. He says they're screwed up, since they can't talk, but he knows she's worth it and he's the man, so he doesn't care if she talks to him, because he's taking his woman home to their bed. She's moving in with him. She tries to say something and he stops her: "Hey! I'm getting the girl here. Don't ruin the moment." Seriously, Charlotte, don't ruin it. I can't even count the number of potentially awesome Coop moments that have been ruined by either Charlotte or Violet. He sure saved this one, though. I like Coop with a backbone.
Addison's out on her patio at night when Bailey joins her and tells her she's all packed to leave. She asks about Sam being in cardio. Addison asks if Bailey wants to know what happened to make him stop, but Bailey says no, it's not Addison's to tell. Addison says Bailey hasn't asked about Squeaky, and Bailey tries to say they don't need to, but Addison says yesterday Bailey had an opinion and was ready to have Addison tarred and feathered. Bailey says that Tucker sent emails to a woman in his Mommy and Me group. She found them after he moved out, and he talked about everything with this woman: their life, what he wanted. She says he never slept with this woman, but he cheated on her the moment he sent the first email, because he shared feelings with her he didn't share with Bailey. Addison says she fell in love with Noah, and she was wrong. Bailey says she did wrong, but at least she tries and has feelings. Bailey says she doesn't even want to be kissed anymore. Addison apologizes, and Bailey hugs her goodbye, telling her she's not the one Addison needs to be apologizing to.
Next day, Addison knocks on Nae's office door and tells her she's done nothing wrong, but she's Naomi. Addison says she feels guilty, and she looks at Nae and sees herself through her eyes, and it's like Naomi's judging her. Naomi says she's not judging her, which Addison knows. She's judging herself for what she's done, and it's just easier to take it out on Naomi than on herself. She apologizes and Naomi asks her if she'd like to sit down. Addison: "Yes, please." What a great ending. I love them back together.
Next week: There's a kid on the street who the Oceanside crew wants to save. She has a heart problem, and Sam wants to fix it. Addison tells him he can't just jump back into surgery, but I think he can. There seems to be an opening in that specialty at Seattle Grace. Pete's annoyed with Violet and it looks like he gives Lucas back to her. Hopefully this kid will never know how much his parents kept trying to give him away.
