Sesame Street is Proven to Educate Children!

    January 16, 2007
Since 1969, Sesame Street has been promoting the intellectual growth of preschoolers. This is not simply just my opinion, but studies have actually been conducted that show a strong positive relationship between viewing Sesame Street and increasing children's learning (as well as better impulse control and concentration). The positive effects of this show seem to benefit children from many various backgrounds, as well as both boys and girls.

Among the positive effects, improved vocabulary, learning of numbers, letters, and other skills such as sorting and classification are the most noted (Mabel Rice 1990). Perhaps the segments of the show children might learn (and retain) the most from encourage their involvement (such as responding with clapping, talking, or singing along), repeated segments to aid in memorization, and the various skits that are possibly found more entertaining.

With all the negative effects many studies have suggested TV viewing has on children, the research on Sesame Street may seem especially hopeful. Television is usually an inescapable part of our lives, and still has the potential to be used for good (as certain cartoons are attempting as well). Not only does Sesame Street provide the entertainment that may be sought after in other programs, it's engaging and repetitive qualities seem to have significant association with intellectual growth in young children as well. Sesame Street may be far more useful than mere entertainment.

    Still the King

    November 21, 2006
Over the last 3.5 years, I have become an expert on children's television. My daughter Halle and Maddie and I have spent many hours in the company of PBS Kids/Sprout, Noggin, and the Disney Channel. And the shows we have watched with some consistency have included Dora, The Wiggles, Thomas, Jay Jay, Dragon Tales, Caillou, Bob the Builder, Between the Lions, Pinky Dinky Doo, Arthur, Oobi, Jack's Music Show, and more.

Some of those shows my daughters have loved but I have hated (The Wiggles) or merely tolerated (Dora). Others, I have thought were great but they have been less enamored with (Arthur, Between the Lions, and Bob the Builder spring immediately to mind).

But Sesame Street is one we all love. It really is amazingly good. They simply do an incredible job of creating compelling television for kids, while still making it enjoyable for adults. In fact there are some bits (like Nora Jones singing "I Don't Know Why Y Didn't Come") which rank in my top TV moments for the years. And I could watch Cookie Monster all day.

So there is no doubt in my mind: Sesame Street is still the king of children's TV.

That said, I also want to give a shout out to Jack's Big Music Show, which is definitely a strong second in the "great for young kids and adults" category.

A Real Contribute to Who I Am

    July 23, 2009
I saw Sesame Street on the show list, and I just HAD to write how I feel about it....This show has been around since before I was born, and I love it! It has taught me so much about how to treat not only my friends, but those I love. I remember getting up in the morning, before I started Kindergarden, waiting for Sesame Street to come on......The thing I love about it the most is that it is a captivating show: the bright colors, songs, and people, help grab young children's attention and maintain it in order to teach them life-long lessons at an early age.......I loved the puppets and the songs the most......Now that I'm in highschool, I don't get to watch it anymore, but when I do stay home, I try to catch it whenever I can, because it is a show that has taught me creativity and to open my mind to new things, and that I will never be too old to learn something new.........(that's the kid in me still holding on to something I love) and I thank Sesame Street for that....To all of the people that contributed to Sesame Street along the years, I thank you for your efforts because, as far as I am concerned, they paid off for me, and are continuing to pay off for our youngest generation.
