What Happened To The Old Jay??
November 25, 2009
I liked Jay Leno as long for as he has hosted the former Tonight Show. Some nights were better than others, but there was always a flow to the show, spontaneity, great guests, and a nice mix of music, comedy, monologue, audience interaction, interviews, etc. I was NOT pleased when they decided to pick Conan to replace Jay, but that's another story. I felt trying to do five nights a week at an hour each was abit ambitious, but I also felt the reality and drama shows needed some competition. I felt if anyone could handle it, Jay could.
I like having SOME of the old band still, although it doesn't seem as full and fun as it was on the old Tonight Show. Kevin continues to laugh at Jay's jokes as he did before, just like Ed laughed to help Johnnie out, but it seems really contrived now.
Jay looks more formal and conservative and older than he did when he left the Tonight Show. What's with the new hair style, combed to the side? His suits are boring and conservative, and he just doesn't have the energy or seem to be enjoying what he is doing! It starts from the minute he comes through those goofy doors on the set, which I also don't like very much. His smile looks phony and forced. It's just not the same old Jay. I am sure he knows the shows ratings are tanking, but I doubt he knows what to do about it. He also probably us not real pleased that Conan was losing to Letterman from shortly after he took over as host of the Tonight Show.
Some of the old gags and skits are good: Jaywalking, Stupid Criminals, Headlines, etc. But between the odd set which has places he goes to talk to people on the large screen for his Ten at Ten questions, to the awkward two chairs, where he sits to supposedly have an intimate chat with his guest of the night, it just is usually alot of moving around and seems disorganized and often, well, boring.
No matter how large the stars he has on, it is simply not the same look and feel that Jay was used to and we were used to seeing on his show. Unless they change alot of things, so it is closer to what he used to have (even if it means Conan doesn't make it because he is nowhere as good as Jay was to begin with) I think they better do something soon. They could start with cutting back to 3 times a week perhaps and spending more time with a better set and things to do in the hour. If that doesn't work I don't see Jay's show living or doing very well unless he changes places with Conan. If Conan and Jimmy K. can't make it on their own, then maybe they need another format or another network.
I miss the old Jay, period. The guy that gets up there now is an older looking frumpy dressing man I recognize, but he has lost his fire and energy for the most part. I'd rather not see him at all than see him try something that is so different from what he did so well for so long. He can't be enjoying this! And I am sure NBC is wondering WHY THE H*LL they ever dreamed up this idea.
Bring back the old Jay or let him play with his cars and bikes and do stand up across the country, where he shines best. It would be a service to us and to him as well.
