About The Show
A seven-part Australian miniseries based on the novel by Roger McDonald. The story, which actually begins in 1913, focuses on the longtime friendship between Walter Gilchrist, the son of a prosperous Australian farmer, and Billy Mackenzie, the lone product of an alcoholic man and his cancer-stricken wife.
When international hostilities finally build up and World War I is declared in 1915, both young men join the Light Horse Brigade and train for what they see as the glamour of war on the side of the British against the Turks.
Their fantasies are soon shattered, however, when they are struck by the senseless human misery that surrounds them. The series depicts the hell of war as seen through their eyes and the lives of their families, their friends, and the girls they leave behind. The story culminates in the tragedy of the Battle of Gallipoli.
