A six-part series produced in Australia. The series, set against the background of Japanese-controlled Malaya during World War II, focuses on Jean Padgett and John Harmon, two prisoners of war whose love for each other survives years of separation and deprivation. Part One sets the stage for the tense drama: the Japanese occupation is just a dim possibility to a group of British rubber planters in Malaya -- until their lives are shattered by the arrival of the Japanese Army in 1941.

It is here that Jean's ordeal begins when she and an ill-prepared party of women and children are forced by the Japanese to undergo a six-month death march through dense jungle and across treacherous roads. As Jean desperately struggles for survival against numerous odds, John too struggles for survival as a prisoner of war.

The title is derived from an Australian P.O.W. who yearns for his hometown of Alice Springs, or for any town like Alice that is free from the ravages of war.
