While swimming, Frances Lawrence, a fifteen-and-a-half-year-old girl, is felled by a cramp and saved from drowning by Jeff Matthews, a surfer who goes by the moronic moniker "Moondoggie." When she befriends Jeff and the other surfers, they nickname her Gidget* and Frances discovers an exciting new life: the southern California beach party scene.
