Ellen and Brian are in love and have successful careers, but the one thing missing is a child. After a miscarriage, they are thrilled when they discover that they are expecting again. However, their lives are turned upside down when Ellen comes close to death when delivering their premature child Emily, who weighs a little over one pound. Throughout Emily's extended hospitalization, Ellen and Brian find comfort in Claire, the neo-natal nurse. After Emily's release, they stay in touch. Claire and her two children spend much of their time with Ellen, Brian and Emily.
