I feel the singing was totally gratuitous and a bare-faced attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Glee. The main difference is that singing is a vital part of Glee's storyline, and it's NOT for Grey's.
Most of Grey's' storylines are sensationalized versions of highly unusual situations and are typically very inaccurate when it comes to medical detail. There are no nurses at Seattle Grace, when in reality a hospital of that size and with that level of acuity t would have at least 10 of them for every physician and not just surgical residents. Clinically the glaring inaccuracies drive me crazy but the notion that hospital staff are all jumping each others' bones every day is just pathetic.
