About The Show
Originally intended as a new series for Beatrice Arthur, but the "Maude" star rejected the idea. It was later turned into "Onward and Upward," a series about a black athlete who tries to win a seat in Congress.
John Amos, chosen as the star, quit over a format dispute when the title was changed to "Mr. Dooley." Lou Gossett also rejected the role. Cleavon Little was then brought on and several episodes were taped under the title "Mr. Dugan." But due to the perceived unfavorable portrayal of blacks, the series never actually aired.
