I'll check out Part 1 when I can find it on Cable, but have seen Parts 2 & 3. Awful because it mostly focuses on all the violence and hatred and very rarely shows any humanity. There was no sense of how these people lived their ordinary lives--it just went from one nasty scene to another.
I personally have met a lovely lady who is a Hatfield descendent a few years ago. She told me that they had all buried the hatchet and have get-togethers as well. Just putting a few sentences at the end of the movie didn't really capture the ending of the feud. A scene with a the treaty should have been included. And there should be an epilogue with the descendents of the families--with interviews & events that they attend. I kept thinking about this lovely sweet lady I met and how horrified she must be to see her ancestors depicted as a simple "savage mountain tribe." I felt bad about that.
Why couldn't we see them as people going about their lives too? Couldn't even tell them apart half the time. They WERE people just as all of us who fight wars are still people. I wanted to see them more humanized. Not just another shootout at the NOT-OK Corral!
Surprised that Kevin Costner was in this and directed it. His sensitive portrayals in movies like Dances With Wolves led me to think that this series would be better.
I WAS glad that he played Anse Hatfield because Anse did try to end the feud at the end.
Let's have less violence and shootouts in the movies and more nuanced portrayals.
